That could certain happen from time to time but it was not a constant feature of the game. In fact the game makes death a costly event (more than most games) so you actually avoid it if at all possible.

The part where you have to run up a narrow beam over nothingness (you fall, you die) towards two of the dark knights that are shooting at you from opposite sides... yeah, that was repeated deaths to bullsh*t. It is about the only area that I can think of in the Souls games that was totally f*cking cheap.
