I gave a quick browse to the Tiny Firewall web site ( » tinyhardwarefirewall.com/ ) and I'm left wondering whether it is a real firewall, or just a VPN client to a firewalled network somewhere? |

Alarmbells for me : Specs
SSL and TLS for security and encryption
Huh? What's this have to do with anything, unless it's referring to the fact it's using OpenSSL / OpenVPN? If you decide to not extend, the VPN and Tor components will no longer function.
VPN disablement I understand, but why would / should Tor stop working? Shipping
Ships to: Continental US only

All sales final
....reaaaaaally? Most of all - no indication of hardware specs - no indication what software it runs - no indication what VPN service it's using Color me very skeptical right now. My 00000010bits Regards |

Don't know if it qualifies for independent or full, but there is a review at: » www.pcmag.com/article2/0 ··· 9,00.aspThe artical is linked from the the firewall's web page. Me, I don't know the firewall people and wouldn't trust them any more than I trust an ISP or the public wifi at McDonalds or the software running on any device that can bypass them all. |

Thanks for the link. quote: Cons
VPN service is expensive. Cannot customize firewall settings. Can't always tell when it's on.
Evidently it uses the Hiillary Clinton model--"just trust me". |

This part of the review doesn't inspire my confidence in the reviewer or his technical competence. quote: The interface is bare-bones, and I love it. You click on a button to select and connect to a wireless network (and enter the password if necessary). You click on another button to turn on VPN. You click on another to disconnect from the wireless. Another button changes the firewall password. There is nothing to fiddle with, nothing to tweak. However, if you want to be able to tweak your firewall or create custom rules, you are out of luck.

» www.pcmag.com/article2/0 ··· 9,00.aspWonder what tp-link and Open WRT have to say about this product from » tinyhardwarefirewall.com/quote: The TL-MR10U can be flashed with a custom firmware, so THF uses OpenWRT, Linux distribution popularly used in embedded devices such as routers. THF uses OpenWRT's built-in firewall capabilities, and users can add the 256-bit version of Hotspot VPN service for an additional $91.25 at checkout.

Interesting that they are utilizing OpenWrt. Unfortunately no Snort for IDS, but that is not surprising considering the low processor speed. Also, no GbE so it would limit the network to 10/100. It is neat but I would rather build my own OpenWrt router. |

From the old thread : said by thfceo :We obviously leaned toward portability and not power here. ...soooo for the "we don't have dedicated IT staff" and "we've got alot of roadwarriors" is where this thing fits. Regards |

Actually the IDS IPS is a mouse click away, no snort can't run on these little boxes but we have it running in the cloud and we can tunnel your web traffic through our proxy. No GbE on anything we have seen yet that runs on USB power, but we have not seen anything yet running on USB power that could do a gigabit, especially when running openvpn.

Thank you for your time. I had overlooked the USB powered portable nature of the device, so you are right about the GbE point. So this device is more intended for travel and portability I understand now and I see the benefits with regards to that. Having Snort running in the cloud is quite interesting and in this purpose takes the heavy lifting away from the device. I appreciate you stopped by to correct on some of the points that I had made. Cheers! |
