liam99 posted : Brian,

So I went through this last night with a few tweaks.

One important step for me in making this work successfully, that is not mentioned in the link, is to unplug the coax cable as soon as you release DHCP (step 9, I believe). This prevents the router from attempting to get a new DHCP lease while you are finishing your configurations. If it does, your ASUS will not get a WAN IP and you'll need to restart the process.

I was not able to do this successfully last night because I was playing with the MAC address cloning - when I had my power outage that I mentioned, the error I was getting indicated there was an IP conflict which I suspect may be alleviated by the MAC address step in the instructions. However, when I try to do that step it doesn't work for me - same issue - ASUS doesn't get the WAN.

When I did successfully get this configuration up and running, I skipped the step of swapping the MAC addresses.

VOD also works for me, but it only took about 15-20 minutes to come back up. It might speed the process if you reset your STB by holding the power buttons for 10 seconds.

etherfree posted : Update to my previous post.

To reiterate. I acquired an Asus RT-N66U in order to establish DDNS through Asus, OpenVPN and enjoy the throughput of the device. Since I already had Verizon FIOS I had in an Actiontec Revision I to work with.

My first attempt at making all this work did not pay off. That was due to my following another thread off of this forum that did not take into account that their solution would lose VOD and channel guide.

After hunting around I came across How-to-Make-Actiontec-MI424WR-Revision-I-Rev.I-a-Network to the letter. Immediately after setting up the devices as called for the channel guide was back. However, VOD was not. I kept getting "Temporarily Unavailable." I didn't tinker with the boxes but continued to look for another set of advice to follow.

24 hours later, VOD is back as well.

This leads me to believe that Verizon puts us through some form of authentication or broadcast offering sync.

Bottom line. The instructions provided in How-to-Make-Actiontec-MI424WR-Revision-I-Rev.I-a-Network work.

liam99 posted : Hey Brian,

I have done this successfully (it can be done!) but it was kind of a nightmare. I followed the directions you have linked there and it worked. Took me about 3-4 days though of trying basically every other possible option first.

I have the same router as you as well but I don't know the name of the firmware. I used the out of the box firmware, so I don't know if Padavan is playing any part in this.

As it happens, I lost my configuration over the weekend when I blew a fuse. In the past the configuration has remained stable through power outages and when moving all my networking gear from one room of my house to another, so I'm not sure why this happened. But I'm going to need to re-create from scratch this evening so as I'm going through I can try to take some screen shots and make thorough notes. IIRC though, everything I did was precisely to the instructions you linked. I first established this configuration about two months ago and it had been stable and working great ever since then.

I'm hoping my notes and memory are good enough that I can set it back up smoothly tonight, if so I will gladly share.

skullduggery posted : Hi, I followed the instructions located here:
»How-to: Make Actiontec MI424WR Revision I (Rev.I) a Network

And I'm still having issues with my new router (Asus RT-N56U running Padavan firmware) getting a WAN IP address from the Actiontec.

The actiontec does pull a WAN IP, so I believe the issue is with the bridging -- it's not communicating with the ASUS. Can someone who has successfully done this with a Rev I running the latest firmware from Verizon please post screen shots of their configuration? I don't know what I'm missing, but it's driving me mad.

Much thanks.

-Brian
