All the devices (cable modem, gateway/router, PCs, Access Point, etc) will be connected to the switch. The switch must support VLAN tagging so it can tag packets accordingly.
bigMc posted : A lot of the open source router software are Linux based, but not all. OpenElec is a media center for HTPC setup and TMK does not have any routing function (Since it is Linux based, you could add additional packages to do whatever you want, but out of the box, network routing was not one of the intended purpose).

The underlying OS is irrelevant for most users since most of the management is done via a GUI. I personally use pfSense which is based on FreeBSD and would be an ease to setup for most users on this thread. DD-WRT, which is commonly used on these high priced SoC routers also have a x86 build.

A fast process is not necessarily required. For simply routing/NAT functions, any recent x86 (Atom, Celeron, etc) would more that suffice. For perspective, I was running pfSense on a PIII 733MHz (Yes! and PIII from 1999) and it max out my 100M LAN connection. I didn't do any official test, but I suspect the NICs were the bottleneck. I have since switch to a Pentium D PC from 2006 (this PC was thrown out by a friend) and it is able to max out two Gig NICs on the LAN. It also runs site-to-site VPN tunnels, VPN servers, Snort, Squid and a bunch of traffic monitoring tools.

Multi-NICs makes the setup easier but is not an absolute requirement. If your x86 device can only support a single NIC, then you will need a switch with VLAN support.

Isn't that a lot of work to configure and maintain or can you get an all in one distribution, kind of like OpenElec? To be honest I don't care about WAP functionality as I have a network of Ubiquiti Unifis in my house as WAPs.

And to be able to handle a 325Mbps WAN connection would you need a relatively fast processor?
Datalink posted : Understand what your saying. All I'm saying is, other products, including apple products can apparently connect using two 20 Mhz channels in the 5 Ghz Band. In this particular case, the Macbook Air is not using 2 channels despite the wifi information that it presents to the user. The wireless throughput, as you point to, absolutely indicates that a single 20 Mhz channel is used to connect to the router, not the 40 Mhz channels that its indicating it is using. So, who's at fault here? The router wireless driver, that allows it to connect to a multitude of other devices correctly, or the singular Macbook Air that doesn't want to play. Without access to the driver code, the only way to really know what is going on between the two is to watch the wireless management message exchange between the two devices and ascertain from those frames, what the router messaging indicates and how the Macbook Air responds. Without one or the other, its all speculation.

Datalink posted : There are a few inconsistencies with the data that is presented. The first thing that comes up is in the Stats. It indicates an MSC Index of 13. If you look at the following figure, you will see that MCS 13 corresponds to a max rate of 104 to 115.6 Mb/s using a single 20 Mhz wide channel. That is right in line with what you are seeing on a wifi download test.

»communityforums.rogers.c ··· 74F8D75B

The reported channel in use in the stats is 161 which in 802.11n is 20 Mhz wide. The channel width below it indicates 40 Mhz wide. If that channel width were really true, you would be seeing a max rate of 216 to 240 Mb/s for MCS 13. The channel should indicate something like "161 -157" to indicate that the adjacent channel below it is being used as the co-channel. Maybe its the way that the data is presented, but it does lead to some confusion. What is the N66U set for in terms of the channel in use? Is it set for 161 or 157 and is it set for 20/40 Mhz or locked down to 20 Mhz only? Also, is the Extension channel set to Auto? I'm looking at my RT-AC68U 5 Ghz network control panel, which I believe will be the same except for the channel width. The AC68U has a 20/40/80 selection as its 802.11ac capable.

Here is a link to the channels as they exist today, including the 802.11ac channels. Note that the 40 Mhz wide channels are numbered according to the mid channel numbers, and not the base channel. The 40 Mhz numbering appears to be original to the 802.11n spec. I don't have a copy of the 802.11n spec, so I can't say with 100% certanty that the spec labels the channel numbers that way. So, what you should be seeing for a 40 Mhz wide channel with your data is channel 159, indicating that either base channel 157 along with channel 161 is in use, or that base channel 161 along with channel 157 is in use. The base channel could be either one.

»forums.inssider.com/show ··· -the-USA

Can you have a look at the 5 Ghz settings in the N66U to see how they are currently set? It might be worth loading inSSIDer just to see how it reports the channels in use versus what you see currently. Is there a selectable setting for the wifi adapter in the Macbook for either 20 Mhz or 20/40 Mhz?
