Microsoft to KILL OFF Patch Tuesday

»www.theregister.co.uk/20 ··· updates/

... Microsoft has shown off some of the new security mechanisms embedded in Windows 10, and revealed a change to its software updates.

Windows supremo Terry Myerson reckons the revised security patch rollout – effectively ditching the monthly Patch Tuesday – will shame Google. ...

So kinda like AV updates and such...

Buuuut...

Windows 10 enterprise customers will stay on the monthly update cycle, which will be reworked as Windows Update for Business: this will allow IT managers to pick and choose updates to deploy, and set when they will be automatically installed.

Emp. mine.

...great, so the (home) user is the beta tester again

I was going to highlight that ....

Also, the ~continuous update~ thing from Microsoft just means to me that Microsoft will have more occasions to brick my computer instead of just the once per month that I can prepare for....

Makes it harder to image drives before updates. MS always manages to screw with something that works. They can't send out "good" patches now. Sounds like Firefox browser.

This new process makes it easier for Microsoft. If making something easier for Microsoft results in making things more difficult for customers, that's a valid trade-off in Microsoft's eyes.

Microsoft has yet to lose the internally directed focus that it's had since the 1990's. At times I wonder what Microsoft would be capable of if they really cared about their customers and making things easier for their customers......

Will we still be able to set Win updates in general to ASK before downloading ?

THAT would solve it for ME anyway, as I usually have set it that way in other Win versions.

Agreed. They do a good job of symbolizing the rampant narcissism in the Pacific Northwest.

Before patch Tuesday it was very, very difficult for shops to keep things patched, especially shops that test patches in lab first. Additionally, where workstations are configured to automatically install and reboot, this kept the reboots down to once/month (except for that last eight months in which MS couldn't get the patches right).

Treating home users as their test bed is just lazy and cheap. Test your own shit, MS. You have more than enough cash to get things right on your own.

I see this as another big move in the wrong direction; the final nail in the coffin of the Trustworthy Computing Initiative, launched in the 90s due to ongoing massive quality and security issues with Windows and Office.

It sounds as if they are going back to the system they used before patch Tuesday, which meant that a patch could be released whenever it was deemed necessary.

Microsoft had called that pre-patch-Tuesday system ~burdensome~ to customers because patches could come at any time.

As a way of doing business, this is as reprehensible as it is irresponsible: intentionally setting up one set of customers as your QA group for another set of customers - and publicly acknowledging it to boot makes it worse. Prediction - the underlying corporate attitude and arrogance behind that statement are going to come back and bite MS hard at some point. And when it does, MS will sit there all perplexed about "why".

Gonna bite them in the BOTTOM (Line, that is).

Another thought :

WTH are we all going to do on Tuesdays any more ?

And will Mozilla still foist THEIR full-numbered releases upon us on that day ?

That's good to hear. But still not nearly enough to get me to upgrade to Win 10. Plus, what guarantees Microsoft won't suddenly change that after a year?

Has Microsoft said anything about Pro version of Win 10? Is just the plain consumer version free for the first year? Who wants that? I have always gotten Pro version of Windows.

I have the Enterprise version I think...build 10074 on Hyper-V. It's the Insider version.

Thanks for the Cnet article.

I can't get it to boot beyond the initial screen. I can't get to a login screen. This current build is a mess.

Personally whichever version ends up being free for the first year, i'll be happy with, very low budget lately here, so happy to have a brand new OS Free, with new features, new updated apps, programs, and such, nice clean functional PC, with updated Avast, Windows 10, and all other programs.

As for updates on Tuesday, I can make due if not done on Tuesdays just fine, as I adapt easily, actually liked Windows 8.0 Modern and Desktop, same for 8.1

Still use it on several older PCs, and it works just fine -- with or without Patch Tuesday.

I was pointing out the hypocrisy of Myersons statement... he is saying that google refusing to update their end of life product is bad, while microsoft also refuses to update their end of life products.

And I was saying that tech updates for a software product that still works (Windows XP or Android) doesn't matter (as long as nobody activates a hidden kill switch). At least I assume that statement also applies to Android driven products -- I never allowed myself to get mired down with Android or iOS devices. My cellphones (which haven't gotten an OS upgrade since before Windows XP went out of style) run on Java (the vendor calls it BrewMP, but it is Java nonetheless).

Windows Update Services
Disabling Windows Updates at a Services Level would certainly cripple (WU) as it would fail to start in all instances fooling the user into thinking her | his OS was borked.

It wouldn't fool me. I've kept Windows Updates disabled in Services for many years and have not gotten patches from WU since 2004. Still doing them that way except on Win 10Preview where we cannot stop auto updates and where we have to use Windows Updates to get patches, new versions, etc. I understand the reasons for this policy on beta testing so I tolerate it but I will not upgrade to Win 10 release version if I can't disable Windows Updates and continue to get patches by reading the bulletins, KB articles, etc and downloading each one from Microsoft Download Center.

I simply set Windows Updates in Services to Manual before I start to install the updates I have gathered and downloaded to disk. The Windows Installer used to work with WU set to disabled in Services but a couple of years ago Microsoft changed that so since then I set the service to Manual before installing the updates and then set it back to disabled. There are no problems with this.

This would be accurate, if it were true - it isn't.

Microsoft still provides updates to XP (for paying customers on a Support Plan), which are of course, the same updates that are provided to WEPOS2009 (which is/are a distribution(s) of XPSP3), until 2019 (that any XP install can get with a simple registry modification).

Hypocrisy claims work best when fact-based.

You would have been better served if you had used MS-DOS, or Windows 3.x as your example, but then, that wouldn't support the point of making a hyperbolic hypocrisy claim, eh?

You do exactly what I do and have never had a single problem.

Edit to add: IE11 Silverlight Updates run with WU disabled. Just did the update. I need to keep Silverlight current and received the "ask first" update notice through IE11. Good enough for me.

Just read Mele20 's post beneath yours. I do exactly the same thing.
It actually saves our machines from getting "borked".
