The problem for a lot of crime is that the cost to try them and then house them is exorbitant. I do feel in this case the banks need to step up (other than soaking people for an identity theft insurance). It's funny, but years back when I needed an equity loan they told me they planned to verify my employment, and that I owned the property. I know for a fact they never checked my employment. Yet I was to pay a fee for that.

I don't think there are harsh penalties at all for white collar crime. I know this doesn't quite fit under what collar, but I mean theft of money and fraud in general.

Being a white male also gets you a lighter sentence as well. :-)

There is real gender discrimination in sentencing of crimes. Given this persons previous arrest record, it seems her sentence for this crime is too light.

Wow, you guys are so predictable. According to a very quick search 7% of the US population have experienced identity theft. This only made the news because she used the money for a boob job. People mortgage homes using identity theft, but I'm not sure that they end up with jail time either.

Restitution for sure - It should come first from the banker who didn't do any due diligence on the guarantor. I've seen a banker offer to visit a home of a shut in for a signature. So either this woman had an accomplice, or the bank was negligent.

yup...same old, same old...all that money wasted catching, prosecuting and "punishing" the same people over and over, creating more and more victims every time...if they'd simply punish them properly the first and second time around, it would be much better.

Agreed. I'm pretty sure they won't force her to have them removed. It's a weird situation, but this would be equivalent to forcing someone into invasive surgery. Any amount of scar tissue, complications, and the gov't would be paying huge bucks as well. Best is to hope for as much jail time as possible.
