Should I ditch Fios for Comcast?

I'm getting frustrated with Verizon FIOS. I pay around $140/m for phone, internet, and fairly limited TV. I called to ask about what it would cost if I cut the TV entirely and there was no savings. So I'm thinking of 2 options: (1) keep FIOS internet, but ditch the TV (switch to Roku) and phone (switch to Vonage). (2) switch the internet to Comcast (and switch to Roku and Vonage too).

I tried looking at Comcast's service plans but I'd need a Ph.D to compare everything. Does anyone think switching to Comcast would be cheaper for equivalent service? Any significant service problems? - Thanks.

One benefit to switching would be native IPv6. Peering/connectivity wise they're both pretty similar.

You don't indicate what tier you're on.
If upload speed matters to you, you probably want to stay with FIOS since Comcast does not have symmetrical speeds.

If you're in an area without caps and the plant is good, I'd say switch. The upload speed really doesn't matter given that a lot of backup services have terrible peering with Verizon and they go slow anyways. Peering between various data centers and Comcast should be better because even if Comcast doesn't peer for free, their transit costs are incredibly minimal compared to Verizon.

I'm still on Verizon but am anxiously awaiting to see what they do with DOCSIS 3.1 and their 2Gbit offering. Verizon has been a complete headache for me both TV and internet. My television picture is spotty at times. They've acknowledged the issue but haven't been able to resolve it. The picture gets really blocky.

So what exactly is the benefit to native IPv6? All devices are NATed via the router?

Only benefit I see is if one has a dedicated IP Address and runs a server that needs to be in an IPv6 domain. I see absolutely no advantage of IPv6 to a residential FIOS subscriber.

No NAT at all with IPv6.

I noticed that the IPv6 Youtube servers tend to be less congested. So that's a benefit.

You better trust your firewall though, since there is no NAT. I am confident my PFSense box is doing its job...so I don't loose sleep.

How do I figure out what tier I'm on? I've wondered about that, so I could check that I'm getting my money's worth. But I don't know how to figure it out.

The speed you subscribe to will be on your bill or if you log in to your account on the Verizon FiOS page.

If you called them to renegotiate, you didn't talk speed? In any case I renewed this week under $60 for a year for 75/75+preferred+HBO then it goes up to $80 (so $70 av).

I also challenge you that if you just have phone/Internet that would be $140--the same price. Even 150 isn't that expensive.

You can lop $20 a month off by ditching phone and I am not sure on your STB cost, but that can be expensive also.

However you don't mention your geography, and if you are going to a frontier market, competition, or native Verizon area. That all makes a difference.

Worst case you can go to Comcast, and if you don't like them come back to Verizon for a much lower cost,

however it is easier to call them up and go to cancel and see what they offer.

IPv6 doesn't matter to anyone except people on this board, so I wouldn't hang my hat on that as a critical factor.

my.verizon.net will get you to your bill so you can see charges.

Note: Don't prefer chat or online. Always call in. I use the "callback" which is really just a callback and then you wait in line. I find it sort of amusing.

I have FIOS 25/25 and Vonage $9.95 a month but after taxes and fees it costs $18.75, so you aren't going to be saving a lot if you drop the phone service.

Comcast has been rated one of the worst companies in america year after year due to it's constantly poor customer service.

One year it was rated lower than the IRS, which is really saying something.

IMO, (and I know, I've dealt with it many times), Comcast has, hands down, the WORST customer service I've ever dealt with.

That's just my 2 cents, based purely from a CS perspective.

My sister in law works for Comcast and will agree with you. lol She hates how they force the reps. to do things the way that they want.

If you can get a better deal with Comcast go for it.

FIOS, Comcast, TWC all have terrible off shored customer service. Assuming you know what you are doing you should not have to call them much.

Fiber vs cable doesn't mean much unless you are at the bleeding high end and want 500 down or North of that.

As others have said, FIOS does have better UP speeds, but very few people even notice or benefit from that. The vast majority of internet traffic is down not up.

FIOS is quietly moving out of the ISP business and focusing on wireless. They sold off FIOS in CA, TX, and FL to Frontier. When they announced their pick your package TV plans recently, they quietly raised prices in many markets for TV and HSI.

Good luck!

That's usually if you call after business hours or are calling about a certain topic. I've always been connected to US call centers when I called Fios. Chat thats a different story. Comcast is the same way. My sister in law works in one of their call centers for customer service and deals with customers all day. T-Mobile is a good example. Call for support and you'll get a US call center. Call to order or activate something and you'll get the Philippines. So it just depends on what you are calling for and when.

If you like what they offer and it's at a good price, then why wouldn't you switch? in my area Comcast can't come close to the price that FIOS gives me. I check with them a couple times a year and with all the extra fees Comcast tacks on, it raises the price way past what FiOS charges me.

Comcast in my area charges $10 monthly add on fee for HD service which is the biggest JOKE !! And you have to factor in the cablemodem montly charge or buy one and if you have phone service you have to rent. The charges at Comcast rise fast (just like Verizon).

Comcast will drop the $10 HD nonsense fee if you complain.
At least they did for me, and I still have HD service.

Its quite the racket they are running.

Do what's best for you. You have to calculate the bottom line and possible increases either inside or outside a contract (below the line fees). Take into consideration companies like Verizon hit cusomers with below the line fees on even internet here in NYC- called a municipal construction fee. Its basically a money grab being allowed somehow by not calling it a "tax" but nevertheless they expect MORE money from the customer.. and since it isn't a big fee you can't wiggle out from a a contract which only guarantees the base rate.

BTW, I thought the HD price was tied to the BOX rented & not the service...
Cablevision tried surcharging for hd channels until satellite tv began offering it for free.. then they stopped that crap. I suggest you claim that you'd go to a satellite tv proider instead. They hate that...worse than the telco.

It is. With Comcast if you rent an HD box they slap an additional $10 fee on top of the rental for the box.

Said fee is nonsense.

The industry has gone fee crazy as it makes it much easier to introduce price hikes without violating contracts. All of the providers should be investigated for this practice.

Well that is super if you are retired or unemployed and can call during the day.

You missed the main point however, which was distinguishing between poor customer service and extremely poor customer service is not material if you know what you are doing.

I called FIOS 3 times in 2 years. Twice were in the same day when the internet was out. The third time was when I canceled service. Was I frustrated when the FIOS rep in the Philippines kept screwing up the "quality statement" which she insisted had to be done before we could proceed? Of course I was, but that extra 5-10 minutes is not relevant.

An HD box rental should only be $7 to $10 a month. If it's not for the DVR BOX/DVR subsciption.. then it is kind of a ripoff paying extra for HD these days when it has become a standard. Just make sure you dont' have a DVR box. Kind of like paying for touch tone telephone service rather than rotary. This is what we call a legacy charge.. which should have been removed from customer's bills. In 2015, how much NEW content really isn't in HD anymore?

Exactly. $10 for the HD box + $10 for the HD technology. If that HD box is a DVR add on DVR fee, forget what that is but it can be as high as $19.

Somehow I talked Comcast into only charging me $10 total for equipment - the X1 DVR. No HD fee, no DVR fee. Its held for a few months now.

Too bad I will likely never see FiOS at this address even though its close. If it ever does come by it wont have the TV part due to politics.
