Re: New Speed Tier NY Market 100/100Just wrapped up the install - the technician had to call one of the "guru" techs to confirm that I should be getting an ethernet install vs coax, and then I worked with him to pull ethernet through three floors of our 125 yr old home. New ONT installed, switched from BPON to GPON, and - get this - no more battery backup! He literally took it away and said that Verizon is now charging for them if you want one ("they charge for everything now" I think were his exact words). But... it's all working flawlessly! Exactly 100mb down, around 120mb up - so apparently no more "fluff" (I do have the TV and phone as well). Kept the same Rev I router (red band), which I plan on replacing with a new Linksys - I don't trust VZ as far as security goes. Will keep the old Rev I around in case it's needed for troubleshooting in the future. |

Weird that there's no fluff on the download, yet you almost get 20mbps extra upload. Have you tried different servers for speed testing and resetting your router? Is it 100 Mbps every time on the download? |

So far yeah, holding pretty solid on the 100 mbps down. The download / upload ratio is similar to my previous 50/50 results - I would get around 58mb down, but up to around 70mb up. Tried the VZ official speed test as well as speedtest.net. |

guyjr,
Did you get the black Arris ONT installed? Also the G1100 Router? |

He already said he has the Rev I router |

This is the one they installed (assuming that this is the Arris). No G1100 router, continuing to use the Rev I that I had before. |

Thanks for the picture, but IDK what that is? It is not the Arris GPON ONT I recently had installed with the 100/100 speed tier. Mine is small, but it is square.
That looks like the power supply. IMO.
Also, what is that wire that seems to be floating in mid air next to it? Is this photoshopped? |

That's a staple that used to hold a wire. You're right, this is the power supply - the ONT is on the outside of our house. |

I just upgraded to 150/150 this week and they replaced my ONT with a newer GPON model and he took the battery out of my old ONT and installed it into the new one. (Coincidentally, the day after I upgraded, the 100/100 option was made available to me. Before that I was on 50/50 and the only upgrade option was 150/150. I'll be dropping to 100/100.) |

OMG, those cheap SOB's! charging for the battery backup unit.. I could see where they might get away with it if your just buying internet... (no phone or tv svc)-- but customers should raise hell if they have at least 2 or the 3 svcs. The BBU doesn't really work if you are ONLY using the ethernet ports anyway. Do they make VZ FIOS BBU's that support the ethernet? |

I'm sure it could be rewired to serve as a BBU for the other two.. not the average schmo would know how to do it though. |

WHich is why I have my BBU plugged into an APC Back Ups Pro 1500 with extended runtime battery attached. I will get 16 to 18 hours of runtime before the BBU battery needs to be used. Then during those 16 to 18 hours I can continue watching TV and using the internet with my other electronic devices on APC BackUps during the power outage. |

When I was upgraded from BPON to GPON last week, the tech had a short pigtail-type power converter cable. The new ONT is being powered from the old BPON power supply with battery backup. Overall, the old BPON unit was the split style-- power supply inside, ONT outside. The new GPON unit looks something like a small broadband router meant for the desktop, clamped inside the big plastic housing on the side of the house. If it needs replaced, they just unclip it, pull the plug, and clip a new one into place. Tech said it's indeed a desktop unit, but that's what they're putting outside now. Doesn't look very durable at all. Time will tell. |

I did this trick a few years ago, and it does keep the internet up as long as the battery lasts. How long that is, I don't know, but it got through a 3-hour power outage without missing a beat. Had internet (on my laptop) the whole time. My laptop battery died before the ONT did. » FiOS BBU operation [long post] |

I have the 1500... expect 8 - 12 hours, you could get 18 - 24 hours if your just keeping your cellphone on there, not an ONT... particularly the new GIGABIT kind (~ 2.5 amps) |
