[Info] IOS Upgrade on a New 3850.Morning all, Just for info I have my hands on a brand new 3850 with IOS-NX. It shipped with an "old" IOS and I'm having trouble getting the USB console to work. TAC said to upgrade the IOS and sent this document. » www.cisco.com/c/en/us/su ··· -00.htmlIt went exactly according to plan so I thought I'd share what happens, starting with copying the new IOS to Flash: from a TFTP server, in this case TFTPD64 running on my Windows 7 Pro laptop. New_3850#copy tftp flash

I had a look at what that gave me with a sho flash. Item 11 is the new IOS. It took nearly half an hour, as you can see. New_3850#sho flash

I know it has a lot of features and capabilities but I doubt I will ever use them. I had to buy this to use a non IT system from another vendor who only has the 3850 switch on their list of approved switches. What I do know is that the commands so far are exactly the same as monolithic IOS. I really hope I have a chance to play with the software some more in future but for now IOS-NX seems to be familiar enough that I could deploy it to site and it'll work as expected. |

Yep. I had to do the same with a few 3650's we have. Took me a while to realize the BIN file installs the packages, it's not just to boot from it. Code upgrade did take forever and a day. |

TFTP was over gigE from my PC to the switch. Both had static IP's and I wasn't doing anything else at the time that would take resources away from either. I was watching progress over console. |
|

257MB file over GigE took 30mins to transfer.... am I missing something here?

|
|

Same thing I was. Speed. But I have no idea what or why. I suspect the issue is the TFTD64 software and/or the switch doing things as the traffic arrives but I have no evidence for that, it's just a WAG. . |
|
| |

I did it via FTP. I don't remember it taking that long. |

A chunk of your life? TFTP is a very slow, inefficient protocol -- small packets, asked for one at a time, etc. Plus, the internal flash is dog-slow, too. If the switch is remotely "local" (and has a usb port), do the upgrade in person from USB. |
|
| |
said by cramer:do the upgrade in person from USB. That's the problem. The USB console doesn't work. TAC told me the software version it shipped with was "very buggy", hence the upgrade. However, USB console still doesn't work. I am going to start a new thread for this issue though... |
|
| |
to markysharkey
Hmm, makes sense from that perspective cramer ... truth to tell, I don't use TFTP much these days but I'd figured it wasn't THAT slow... Regards |

Ive mostly given up on TFTP for much these reasons.
These days I prefer:
USB storage (thumb drive) if the box has a USB port SCP if the software supports SSH Some other method like HTTP or FTP TFTP as a last resort
Tried recovering a 2960 via xmodem the other day, until a colleage told me there is a way to TFTP. I didnt see him do it, but he managed to fix it much quicker than I could... |

"from usb" as in "usbdisk0:" -- it doesn't have to be in flash or extracted (into flash) to be processed. |
