Need Help with Verizon DSL Router

Verizon DSL is the only service available where I live. I currently have an Actiontec router. It needs resetting daily in order for our internet to work. I previously had a Belkin router and was thinking of adding this to my network to see if 1. my issue is the router and 2. to allow guests to use the Actiontec router and have only family use the Belkin. Can I do this? Does it make sense? Any help would be appreciated. I have spent endless hours on the phone with Verizon and they say this is the best they can do.

You can use both the Actiontec and the Belkin. Unless you double NAT the Belkin behind the Actiontec your network can only have one router.

The easiest way to start is convert your Belkin into an AP. If it doesn't have a specific AP operating mode all you need to do is turn off its DHCP server function, run a cable from a LAN port on the Actiontec to a LAN port on the Belkin and be sure the radios on both devices are on different channels.

May want to take a look at this , or as Merlin235 suggested, connect the actiontech's LAN port to the Belkin's WAN port.

My immediate question though is your comment "It needs resetting daily in order for our internet to work," so ONLY internet dies and LAN
connectivity still works or all internet AND LAN connectivity dies? If the former, the combination actiontech and belkin won't do much, as
far as I can see... unless I'm misunderstanding your setup here.

I was actually going to buy a little fan today! It would be a blessing if this was all caused by the router overheating!

A solution I use is a cheap laptop cooler. The metal works as a heat sink, has a fan in it, and some even come with mini USB hubs. Looks cleaner then a fan IMO too. I happen to use the ZM-NC1000.

As for it resetting, I'm with Hellfire. If your having problems with 1 router, fix that first before you add another router. What kind of Verizon gateway do you have? Do you have access to its diagnostics? The logs may tell you why it's resetting. It doesn't "feel" like a overheating problem to me.

If you have to reboot your Verizon router all the time putting in another router after the Verizon router is NOT going to fix or tell you anything other then you still have to reboot your Verizon router.

The DSl modem / router is a modem with a phone connection built in for the DSL modem. If you want to try anything go buy a DSL MODEM/ Router from best buy and configure that with whatever account settings Verizon uses out therefor your DSL account into the new router. Usually its PPPOE if the problem still happens its an issue with the line from your modem to the Demarc of the house or from the Demarc on the side of the house out to Verizon in the street or even further into the central office.

Most DSL modems you can log into and see whats going on such as if it has Sync meaning its showing connected to the Verizon network. If you log into your Verizon router usually »192.168.1.1 username= admin password= password or password1 unless its been changed you can go under diagnostics somewhere and look when the problem is happening.

I would suggest that first before spending any money on another DSL modem/ router. if its not showing sync then have Verizon come out and look at your lines or at your equipment.
