Split from: Why is BHN Secure being forced down my throat????"When Wi-Fi is turned on you will be automatically connected to Wi-Fi HotSpots throughout the city provided by Bright House Networks,"
Yeah. hmmm All the better for carrier, Google, and thus NSA and whoever else to know where you are by their 3rd method of tracking. Remember when someone actually had to FOLLOW you to know where you went?
Imagine, if you will, a time when we had lots of privacy.
Where's my tinfoil hat? I know it's around here somewhere. |

Re: Why is BHN Secure being forced down my throat????I miss those days. I ditched my smartphone for a cheap, no-frills one a couple months ago and my credit is now frozen because of the Gov't. hack. I long for those simpler times. |

I usually leave my wifi OFF unless I need to turn it on at a destination, but I have seen allegations that the phone is "touching" wifi nets even when off. No clue if that's true or not, but it would not surprise me one bit. |

No clue if that's true or not, but it would not surprise me one bit. It's not "touching" them so much as it broadcasts it's own "beacon" in an attempt to see what networks and other wifi devices are out there. You can just passively listen for devices, you don't have to actively be contacted by them. iPhones work around this slightly by randomizing the MAC address it sends in those beacons, so if you walk through Macy's with your iPhone turned on, with wifi turned on, they can't track you through the store. Every time your phone sends a beacon it has a randomized hardware address and looks like a completely different phone. However, that functionality is subject to certain conditions being met, and there are other ways to track you. Also, the government can track you if the phone is on at all, so the wifi stuff only keeps private companies like department stores from tracking you. |

It's just common knowledge. Search Google for "stingray" and do some reading. There are multiple ways the "government" can track you, depending on what agency, how badly they want to find you, whether or not they have a warrant, and whether or not they want you to find out later. If they have a warrant they can just go to the phone company and have you tracked. If they really, really need to find you they can also force the GPS to turn on (all cell phones since 2005-2007 something like that have had that capability) If they don't want to involve the phone company they could setup stingray(s) and track you that way, via triangulation or by intercepting your traffic, which if you're using the internet is probably leaking your location via location services in your apps and smart phone OS. |

I do t want to connect to any hotspot other than my mifi device. Something has o violist updated or got pushed to my phone because it just started this nonsense. I'm sitting at another location and it's popping up constantly. Annoying the hell out of me. |

LBE Security Master app puts an end to that nonsense on Androids. |
