[Wiring/Filter/Splitter] Removal of NID box if no service? We have no Verizon service at our house, and zero possibility of ever getting it, our house has a gray Network interface device box on the side which has wires from underground running into it, but then nothing from there into the house... why do I need this box? is there anyway to have it removed? It's just a POTS line no DSL service ability (they never serviced our area with DSL) or anything... |

I see people remove their interface all the time. For example new siding is being installed and the contractors/homeowners need to Remove the NID. If the homeowner does not have POTS/DSL the drop Is usually coiled up at the pole and stays there.
I believe the interface belongs to verizon, So I would call Verizon and ask first just to be on the safe side. Good luck making that phone call. I would head to a local office If possible and ask.. |

Just to second what wiggie116 posted the NID and aerial/underground drop wire is Verizon property. Having said that it is unlikely you are going to have trouble if your remove it. Even though you said there is no chance of ever using it if it were my house I would not remove it because the feed is underground. If you ever change your mind, find a CLEC for VDSL/DSL, or sell the house having access to the underground feed will come in handy. /tom |

Also you're in PA so DSL might be just around the corner ... |

no, they wont put a VRAD in our development, the development asked them in the past about DSL and they basically told them "never"... it's a well developed area also, but we are 2 miles from the CO and they don't seem to care about us. We already have 505 Mbit fiber in the development available from Comcast and 200Mbit fiber from another local ISP, so DSL is kind of a joke at this point. ha... don't see myself ever going down to DSL after being on a 200Mbit connection for the past 3yrs... |

Verizon doesn't use VRADs. Also, it's a state law, so they will be required to do something... |

they already meet the requirement of the law the last time I checked the zip code has to be serviced, it is serviced by DSL in 80% of the area, just not our development. |

It's not just by zip code. It's each individual CSA (carrier servicing area). |

Unless you can remove the verizon wire to your house you can't safely remove the box. The nid has a lightning/high voltage protector built in and it might save your house.
You could pull the wire out and stuff it underground, or screw all the pairs and the sheath to a ground wire... but I didn't tell you to do that and I'm not an electrician and your house could absolutely catch on fire and explode in a beautiful high voltage display the next time telco plant comes in contact with power. |

I've seen a few NID doors blown right off. Vinyl usually melts around the box. Pretty amazing how electricity travels over copper |

OP, what other wires are you removing? I would leave well enough alone. |

said by pjsutton:It's not just by zip code. It's each individual CSA (carrier servicing area). That's mostly meaningless too. My CSA has DSL, has had it for a long time, I'll never see it. VZ says my options are DirecTV or LTE. I don't see that changing before the end of the year. |
