Re: [Comcast Equip] Savings buying a Tivo instead of renting a DVR

I am looking move from Triple Play XF Preferred (two rooms) to Starter XF, and replace my equipment with a TIVO Bolt. I don't have a need for the 220 channels, and I want to plug my AMZ Prime into the Bolt. Will the Bolt supply the HD for the Starter XF service? Can anyone think of a reason not to do this?

Short answer is "Yes".

I'm not sure what you mean by "Will the Bolt supply the HD for the Starter XF service?"

In order to view HD content from Comcast, you will need to pay the HD Technology fee Comcast charges customers. This is the same as if you were using Comcast's set tops.

If you sign into your Amazon Prime account on the Bolt you will be able to view the HD content Amazon Prime offers.

If I misunderstood the question, I apologize and I'd be happy to help further.

I asked the question of Comcast. The agent told me that to obtain HD on Starter XF, I would need the HD Box, that the standard box wold not enable HD. I told them I wanted to use a TIVO box. The response was that they did not know if the TIVO box supported HD. So, it seems to me that Comcast does not change the signal to customer; that the box determines whether the picture is SD vs HD?

Yes, you will need a CableCard and the TiVo will support HD service. Note that you may not get charged the HD Technology fee if you have no other Comcast equipment on your account (I don't and I'm also on Comcast in VA).

This seems to vary between Comcast franchises though but it can't hurt to argue the point if you do get charged for it.

Not getting charged the hd fees is more luck of the draw. Depends how your local system has the security set up. But for the record i dont see any packages with the exception of limited basic that actually allows free hd stations.

At least for our Comcast franchise, you only get charged the HD technology fee if you have any Comcast equipment. The footnotes in the rate chart reference this in relation to any of the services that come with Comcast HD equipment (STB or DVR) as "Requires HD Technology fee".

Also the packages on our rate chart don't specify SD or HD service specifically (we have the Digital Preferred with one premium) although the Triple Play packages include the HD Technology fee as it's required for the DVR or AnyRoom DVR Service that comes with it.
