Re: steam controllerAll is not lost; the F710 is listed as one of the officially supported controllers for the Steam Link, so despite not being able to make a case for a Steam Controller you can probably justify getting a Steam Link. |

There was an alternative installer called "ye olde steamose" that's been moved to another project called Stephenson's Rocket: » stephensonsrocket.horse/I tried it on release and I felt it was similar to Steam on Linux, I'm assuming it's improved substantially since then. I just installed Mint Linux to give Steam Linux another go because it's kinda clunky on Manjaro, I'll let you know how it goes once I figure out how to install CCC on Mint. |

Steam link sounds like it's pretty awesome but I already have an htpc attached to my TV that is capable of running games at 1080p |

Ouch. Think I'll have to pick up another drive, and try it out. Ah who am I kidding, I haven't got the time at all... |

The Rocket/ye olde allows for re sizing but time is the real issue here as well |

said by ekster:Steam link sounds like it's pretty awesome but I already have an htpc attached to my TV that is capable of running games at 1080p Have the link here, and it works _as advertised_. In other words, wireless good, wired better and is good at providing input(s) (Steam controller, Xbox 360, F710, Keyboard / trackpad or mouse), and up to 60fps@1080p. Caveats: Compression works best with a source system that has NVIDIA (some blocking issues on AMD and Intel (mixed)) and single cards (SLI and Xfire screw up the compression - very apparent in titles like Witcher 3). Also multi-screens (Eyefinity) dond't play well. For games from source: Games that require a launch pad (ESO, GW2, Elite Dangerous, Dragon age Inquisition) do not start well either and some won't stream at all (white, green or black screen) if the steam overlay is left active. The performance is also very dependant on the source system, as some % of processing is used for streaming so weaker source systems may (mostly will) require a tone down on settings. Streaming is also very vulnerable on the wireless band (even 5GZ) to any interference, be it external or from other devices traffic. Wired not so much but keep in mind that 30mbs should to be reserved for best performance. So far 3 Firmware update have been done and each continue to improve both performance and some of the issues described above with more in the pipe. Not a bad toy if one is willing to accept the 1080p limit and likes the quiet afforded by having the main system in a different location in the house. |

Out of curiosity, do you know what real life bandwidth it uses for a smooth 60FPS @1080p?
If it really works as advertised, I might be interested in picking it up the near future instead of upgrading my second PC, provided my network can handle it. |

With compression, it's less than 20 (15-18). It will hit the 30 cap without. |

I'm very interested, too...I actually run a coax network setup from my upstairs cable modem down to the living room. It probably gets 80/Mbs or so (it's still just a 100/Mbs device), which I'm hoping should be plenty....REALLY want to play some of my stuff downstairs. The 1080p thing is fine, max res on my tv anyway, and while I run 3 monitors, I don't use Eyefinity. AFA the controller...I doubt I'll jump on that for the moment...the 360's I have should work fine, and I don't know that there is enough of a gain to justify it. --edit-- I do have an aging AMD card tho.... :| |
