Hopefully, the investigators will have the good sense to drag the investigation out, then quietly sweep everything under the rug.
I don't think even the army wants to find itself in the unenviable position of giving a solider a bad time for shooting back when he was being shot at; the attendant publicity would not exactly enhance their recruitment efforts.
