need help with crouton linux related to display manager (the lack of one)

Ok not sure any one here can help but nothing much on google. Im running a chromebook a lenovo n21 with a full debian install of crouton currently with kde plasma and enlightenment. I can run any display manager that is on croutons list of targets eg gnome kde e17 xfce and others but when it comes to ones like afterstep and others that are not i can not use them and i can not get at them the normal way via a display manager say lightdm or gdm kdm etc. I was wondering if any one here knows how to get one installed on chromebooks via crouton or other method not requiring full installs of linux replacing chromeos. This is not a oh my god i must get this done at all costs eal it is more a i want to do it to learn something new. EG i can and will at some point replace chromeos just wanting to find a working solution that does not do it.

To me it is more fun to figure out how to do this than to go the obvious route. Also replacing chromeos likely is not a option for some people with these devices. So i can take what i learn and help them out after words.

I have no idea what limitations are imposed by Crouton so I'll ask a silly question...

Can't you install software from inside Crouton using synaptic, apt-get or aptitude?

Yes how ever not all will show up under my chroot shell. Basically to start say e17 once i power up the chrome book i open the chrosh terminal and type shell then sudo starte17 or sudo startkde
At this point it enters the chroot and does its thing. How ever if i install something in crouton linux it shows up only there in some cases. For example starting from scratch with gnome i can then install enlightenment (e17) and try starte17. Ill be presented with the selection for language and then a black screen likely some dependencies are not avail to chromeos so e17 fails to go further. Im about to drop down to chrome os and see if i can apt-get from there. Many commands from linux are avail from the shell term (chrosh) under chromeos. Will post back from chromeos if i have any luck.
