[ipv6] Ugh, IPv4/NAT Needs to DIE!

Noticed that my Server/Sites/Services had become inaccessible from of the internet, and by most I mean the IPv4 internet.

After some digging turned out my router (an ERL on 1.7) had forgotten how to portforward apparently, the rules were still there and I could see packets hitting the WAN but that's where they stopped. IPv6 continued to work fine of course since there is not NAT and just pure routing and firewall.

I decided just to reboot the ERL which has restored NAT port forwarding, but I dream of a time it and IPv4 will be dead or not needed enough to not care about providing services on it.

Sounds like it was more an issue with the ERL's code than an issue with the NAT protocol / RFC itself.

But hear what you're saying...

Yes, but NAT is just one more thing to go wrong and anyone who prefers it instead of IPv6 is nucking futs.

Right. Because firewalls never go nuts and stop processing rules, and routers never go nuts and stop following certain routes.

Bad code is simply bad code. It exists everywhere.

True. But as I said, it 1 more point of failure that is eliminated with IPv6,.

Sure, but I'll take that over NAT and increasingly 2, 3 and 4 layers of NAT.
