New ONT connection to Quantum Gateway Router

My Manhattan apt old setup was fiber from outside to my ancient ONT then coaxial to my old actiontec in my bedroom. The coax then split and went to my Tivo box with a FIOS cable card inside. I also ran ethernet from the actiontec to my Imac desktop, my PS4 and my Tivo (to pull guide data and use the Tivo Netflix app) I have 757/75 speed tier.

A few months ago I purchased the quantum gateway router to take advantage of the dual band wifi and WIFI ac speed. I have noticed that the new router is clearly faster then the actiontec for wifi but my devices also dropped the 5g band routinely and the speeds on 2.4 on the gateway seemed worse than the old actiontec.

After the old ONT started to fail and also having battery backup issues I decided to upgrade service to 300/300 speed so i could get a tech to rewire my apartment properly and to get the new ONT equipment. i had read on here that the new ONT plays nice with the gateway router and upgrading was the only way to get this.

So i just upgraded and have new ONT. Everything is super fast wired and my newer devices that can receive wifi ac on 5g can get close to 300 speeds wirelessly (depending where I am in apt)

But the devices still drop the 5g on occasion and that bugs me. I have tried different channels and playing with some of the features in the router software. It is also possible that my neighbors in my high-rise are possibly knocking me off or some other interference. But I also suspect the coaxial cable coming from the new ONT.

The tech who installed the new ONT ran an ethernet cable to my gateway router but he also insisted I needed the coaxial going from the new ONT to the router as well. He said it would interfere with my Tivo/cable card setup.

But now that i am still having drops I am wondering if I need the coax connection or can i just use the ethernet?

Yes, you can disconnect the coax, however, that should have no bearing on the drops you're experiencing.

ha that's great. Well i guess i will experiment tonight. Any advice on how to keep a stable fast connex?

Do you have an android phone? Wifi analyzer is a free app that will show all the channels around you including yours, etc. May want to see how congested things are. 5GHz is usually a safe bet but these days maybe not in a high rise.

yeah have tried that app and also bought an extender/access point with same SSID and that has improved range. But the drops may not even be a problem with the router. I do have certain devices that seem to keep the 5G (like my Galaxy S6 and my Macbook Air) but others, like our iPhone 6 will drop so it is frustrating.

So now that my router has been tethered to this new ONT via ethernet why do I need the coaxial connection? Why would my tech insist to keep it there? I do have a coaxial from router going into the Tivo (with FIOS cable card) but it is also connected to the router via ethernet.

this is my current speed test results for the iMac which is wired to the router:

Do I need to worry about speed quality or bufferbloat? Is there a software fix if this is an issue?

Do the wifi radios have different SSID's? Out of the box, both the 2.4 and 5g have the same SSID and they have found that was a piss poor decision to have them made that way. We are now supposed to split the SSID when we install them.

This may explain why your apple products aren't playing nicely with it. Also, they have found that the "auto-channel" selection is also poor, and you would be better off setting it to a fixed channel. Use a wifi analyzer to figure out what the least crowded channels are and set it appropriately.

*by "they" I'm referring to the developers... Brainiacs that they are not...

In your OP, you said you upgraded to 300/300. Or maybe you're back down to 150/150.
Top speed is grade C because it is averaged over many users somehow.
Bufferbloat can be addressed by tweaking QoS to a bit less than your max speed. I think there is a post by someone who claimed success. I don't remember if it was actiontec or quantum. Dd-wrt or other alternative firmware is easier to tweak.

if your network performance is acceptable, then don't sweat it.

I would contact tech support or post in Verizon direct forums and ask if the router has been provisioned for the speed package you had before.

There is no "provisioning" in the router for speed packages.
