You still use SMTP (or hopefully an encrypted variant!) to send. This does not change with IMAP. It changes how your client retrieves and displays mail and what it does with email messages it retrieves.

OP here: This is what I was looking for.. "imap" replaces POP3 for 'receiving email', but SMTP (or SecureSMTP) is still required for sending mail.
