Arris SB6183 IPv6, TCP6 bug. Looking for firmware update.

There is a confirmed firmware bug with SB6183 (and other modems using the same Broadcom chipset), that causes severe packet loss for IPv6 TCP6 packets with timestamp option set. Since this is the default behavior for some OS's TCP stacks (e.g. modern Linux kernels, some Andriod builds, etc), it makes IPv6 almost unusable on those systems.

This fix has been verified by Comcast, and customers affected by the problem in Oct, 2015, when Arris provided the new firmware.

I'm trying to find out if any engineers or techs from Cox have this on the radar, and know if/when they expect to get a new firmware with the fix for this issue. It has been plaguing me since upgrading my modem.

There is a good write-up about this problem, by Dan found here:
»blog.dan.drown.org/sb618 ··· traffic/

This is the long Comcast thread, that ran its course to resolution.

»[IPv6] SB6183 IPv6 problems

Sincerely,
Ben

It's in the lab now, I'd disable IPv6 in the meantime.

I have firmware SB6183-9.2.0.0-GA-04-37-NOSH. Browsing the Comcast thread, it seems that theirs is a completely custom build and looks nothing like what I have.

Would it be possible to hook my modem up in Comcast land, get the firmware pushed to it and then hook it up back on Cox without Cox overwriting the firmware? I know usually it is pushed via the modem bootup TFTP initialization, but if the Comcast firmware is newer, will it get priority and deny a firmware change?

If a criteria is setup for your modem model it would get downgraded during maintenance.

I've having a similar problem but with IPV4 traffic from android / linux based devices. The cable modem is mangling the window size headers which is causing all my roku devices to fail to connect.
What is the newest firmware? I have SB6183-9.2.0.0-GA-04-37-NOSH..

Any idea as to when it's going to be rolled out? My SB6183 still shows firmware SB6183-9.2.0.0-GA-04-37-NOSH.

PModog See Profile, orCoxTech1 See Profile on here, with your modem's mac address, and one of them one push it to your modem when they're on here again.

odog helped me out and pushed D30CM-OSPREY-1.5.0.1-GA-01-NOSH to my modem. Now all my devices work without a problem. Yay.

On March 9th you pushed D30CM-OSPREY-1.5.0.1-GA-01-NOSH to my modem. Now I see that I am back on SB6183-9.2.0.0-GA-04-37-NOSH after three consecutive modem reboots early this morning. Now IPv6 is almost unusable again. What happened?

Sounds like your local cox system is downgrading the firmware. Either CoxTech1 See Profile or odog See Profile should be able to re-push the firmware, and make sure your local cox system doesn't downgrade it again.

This is weird, modem was rebooted again early this morning. Still on SB6183-9.2.0.0-GA-04-37-NOSH.

Back on 3/7 I posted a question regarding the SB6183 firmware in testing: Any idea as to when it's going to be rolled out? My SB6183 still shows firmware SB6183-9.2.0.0-GA-04-37-NOSH.

I received one response saying I should PM odog or CoxTech1 to get it pushed to my modem. Which I did know that I could do. I wasn't looking for special consideration. My question should have said, Does anyone know when the new SB6183 firmware is going to be pushed to the general public.

Is there an approximate timeline?

Just as an FYI: Here in Cleveland IPv6 appears to be very unreliable. It's working one day and then not working the next. No pattern that I can see. Yes, I've tried rebooting everything, no luck. Again, leaving everything running with no changes, it's working one day and not the next.

Any information would be appreciated.

It could be modem firmware related. PM me your MAC address and I'll take a look.

Hello All,

I logged into my R7000 Nighthawk to enable IPv6 using the auto-detect. To my surprise and joy, I was assigned an address by DHCP instead of 6 to 4, as it had been. (I disabled IPv6 at the router a month or two ago because it was acting wonky after updating router firmware...)

I rebooted the router, and all my devices now had a DHCP assigned IPv6 address, however, when I tested it on various IPv6 test sites...well..no can do...so.. after doing a search for the DNS address that Cox DHCP assigned, here I am...

I have Cox service in New Orleans and a SB6183 modem with firmware version SB6183-9.2.0.0-GA-04-37-NOSH.

Does the updated firmware D30CM-OSPREY-1.5.0.1-GA-01-NOSH help the issue, and if so, can it be pushed to me?

Thanks in advance!!

Just ordered a SB6190 modem. I briefly read through the thread but didn't see anything about the SB6190. Does this bug also affect this modem as well? Thanks in advance.

Heard no mention of anyone experiencing an IPv6 issue over at the Comcast and Arris threads with the SB6190. As far as I can tell, it's smooth sailing.
