Re: French immersion in schools

Mandarin and Arabic are not official languages. Although we have lots of immigrants who speak it, the expectation is for them to learn either English or French if they intend to live here permanently.

Is that the reality, though, in Vancouver and so forth?

Also many Asian economic powers such as China, Hong Kong, and Korea are very keen on ensuring their future generations are fluent in English.

That is true, as English has become the de facto leading language for business, medical and scientific research, and so forth.

As I've documented here on DSLR in the past, many scientific journals based in China now are published in the English language!

Maybe the ones with f*** you money are resistive to learning English or French. However, even though major cities in Canada are very multicultural it can be extremely difficult to access medical care and other government services if you don't speak an official language. Also meaningful employment will be impossible here if you don't speak an official language.

Also most immigrants who stay here long term intend to apply for citizenship. If you cant speak an official language there is no way you'll pass the citizenship test or the interview. Having taken the test myself, it is more of an English or French test vs a test of your knowledge of Canada. An American, Brit, or Aussie with zero knowledge of Canada can get 100% on the citizenship test because they can understand the nuances of the English language well enough to weed out the incorrect answers. Whereas someone who speaks minimal English and spends months studying and memorizing everything in the official study guide can easily fail.
