Security Alert is now posted: Due to the severity of this vulnerability and the public disclosure of technical details, Oracle strongly recommends that customers apply the updates provided by this Security Alert as soon as possible. » www.oracle.com/technetwo ··· 497.htmlI'm not smart enough to know just how genuinely severe it is, so guess I'll be updating. Thanks Nick! |

Ouch! That's nasty! 9.7 vulnerability on a 10 point scale.
After reading the security alert, I now understand why the Java installer INSISTED on uninstalling the vulnerable version after installing update 77. I have never seen that before. Usually, you have to initiate uninstalls of older versions and interestingly the installer did not care that it also found another older version as it left it intact.
I couldn't read some of the information the installer was trying to show me as somehow it decided to use a HUGE font and the window could not be dragged or clicked larger so text was running off the right edge and the bottom sentences were completely off the screen and not visible. I don't recall a huge font in the past...strange.
Anyhow, thanks. I'm glad I got that quickly due to your post Nick. |

said by Mele20 :Ouch! That's nasty! 9.7 vulnerability on a 10 point scale. I updated Java last night and everything proceeded normally. When the installer finished and I went to open the control panel to check the configuration, there was no control panel. Most of the links under the Java shortcut in the Start menu were missing. There was no Configure Java, no Check for updates, etc. Programs and Features still showed Java installed, and Program Files and %appdata% found a scattering of mostly empty folders. I uninstalled Java. This is the first time this happened and I have an idea why. I had installed Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit Free earlier that evening, which has shields for Java protection. I know that you use this program. Do you have to disable the shields in order to update Java? |

said by jupitermoon:Do you have to disable the shields in order to update Java? Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit Free was running and fully enabled when I updated Java. I've had Ant-Exploit for awhile now and updated Java before this time with it running. It's never caused a problem...but I run Windows 8 not 7 or earlier. That's very strange what happened to you. |

This behavior also seems to depend on how the old version was installed, as there are at least two variations of the GUID string for each version, plus 32 or 64-bit versions. I stop trusting the installer, and just have my scripts to search for and uninstall the old versions before doing a silent install of the new version. |

Well if they don't fix it at some point they'll get fined by the FTC likely more harshly then before. |
