I just had to reset mine to be able to pull up any websites. Updated to Google DNS, and is running fine now. |

I just encountered the same thing. Only on one machine on my network, but it was the only one that had been taken down for maintenance. Weird. |

Looks like a lot of people are having problems with with internet. Charter sent this out on twitter "We are aware of issues with customers watching TV and accessing the Internet. Our team is working to restore the service as soon as possible" » twitter.com/Charter/stat ··· 21163520Charter deleted the last tweet new tweet We are aware of an issue affecting the ability to watch TV and access the internet. I'm in the Lawrenceville area, and have been having a problem with Google intermittently tonight also. Haven't changed my DNS server though.
Just read your latest post ... thanks for the heads up about Twitter post. |

Yep, just came here after switching mine to OpenDNS. Google's seemed slower for me tonight for some reason. |

Why would you ever use your ISP's DNS as primary?
Always, always, always use Open DNS or Google DNS as Primary and Secondary, and if your device has a 3rd DNS option, then use your ISP as a last resort. |

Always, always, always use Open DNS or Google DNS as Primary and Secondary, and if your device has a 3rd DNS option, then use your ISP as a last resort. Because some sites and CDNs work better/faster with DNS servers hosted in the same ASN. Not a huge deal but there is a benefit. |

Typically your ISP's DNS servers should be faster. |

No issues here in Michigan.
I do however have my router setup to use Charter for primary DNS and Level3 for secondary DNS. |

I'm in Michigan also and had no issues with tv or internet. Don't use Charter's, Googles, Open DNS, or Level 3's servers either! Use the servers that are marked as fastest and don't forward me to some funky page if that page isn't found using this tool, » www.grc.com/dns/benchmark.htm |

I lost all service last night when a severe storm rolled through St. Louis. Modem lights stayed on but there was no connectivity behind it. Even changing DNS did not actually work here; had to resort to tethering which was also overloaded. |

I wonder if Charter got attacked or if mother nature got them. |

You might also consider running your own caching dns server. Not only can it usually handle these types of outages better but you typically get a little performance improvement as well. Further you usually have for more configuration options and can specify many dns servers to use as sources so that one is almost always going to work. Personally I use one called pdnsd (persistent dns) on a Linux home server but there are many choices available. |

I used the different DNS testing tools and Charter always seems to be best or 2nd best and Level3 tested better than Google DNS. |

As posted elsewhere, try » www.grc.com/dns/benchmark.htm to determine which DNS servers are fastest - - it's not always your ISP. The Charter DNS problem pops up every few months and I quit using their DNS years ago and do not endure these periodic problems. |

I have, and Charter's are faster. |
