Windstream Performance

Click for full size
I have been a Windstream customer for less than a year. In that time i have rarely seen the 10X1 they promised me and that I pay for monthly. I have burned out two of the cheap modems they provide and finally bought my own when they failed to come out and replace the last one.
In recent days the availability has really been bad. The connection was out for 5 minutes or more at least 20 times yesterday. I have installed ThousandEyes testing in the network and am seeing poor results in the router near me. I have tried to call Windstream about this and rarely get through. I have yet to get a response from them.
Take a look at the attache ThousandEyes test result for this morning. I would engcourage any Windstream customer with the ability to setup a free account at ThousandEyes and get testing. If we have some numbers we can force this to get fixed.

Hello and thank you for contacting Windstream. We apologize you are not getting the speeds you pay for.
We must admit we are intrigued by your statement that you "Burned out" two modems. We can't imagine how that was accomplished.
If you would like for us to check into your slow speed issues, please post to our Direct Support Forum »Windstream Direct. We will take a look and be in touch.
Thank you

Packet Loss
Thanks for getting back to me. I guess this is the way to get a response. I appreciate it.
The burned out modems is just that. We hooked up in January and by March the first modem just stopped working. It took a couple of days to get someone from Windstream to come out and replace it with a 'Newer' type that was supposedly better. Some time in May this modem died. I had purchased a DLink as a backup and i installed that with the support person on the phone to see if it was indeed the second modem. This was supposed to be temporary until someone arrived with a new one. No one has ever called me back.
I have been really frustrated with the packet loss and the intermittent outages i see here. I have installed ThousandEyes in the network and recorded the packet loss over the last few days. It is usually associated with the router in the attachment.

I hope we can get this fixed. I work at home and this poor performance is effecting my work.

I think asking for help is implied here. Not sure what a PM is.

PMs are private messages. Just click on the wee envelope at the bottom of Windstream post. It will be between you and Windstream.

If you want to post in the Windstream Direct forum, make sure you are logged into the site before trying post in there. In that forum on you and Windstream techs will be able to read it - no one else. That way you can post your private info that they might need to provide help.

Is that test directed at that router or are those test to a destination server?

For the record ThousandEyes seem to assume a router not responding to all ICMP directed at it is bad and is "packet loss" that is not the case.. js.

Did you see the post where Napsterbater said that ThousandEyes is reporting all unreturned pings as dropped packets? These are commonly dropped by intermediate nodes.

Your download does seem to be alarmingly slow though.

I dont put any faith in ThousandEyes at all after letting it run on my line for a week+.

Where was that speedtest done?

Consistently slow speed test tend to suggest (but not always be) oversold DSLAM/Backhaul of which Windstream is known for.

Post you modem DSL stats.

Modem is in Bridge mode....no stats
To bad you don't put any faith in it. 500k customers would disagree....

When it claims packet loss at a hop and I know that hop does ICMP deprioritization. yeah that make me question anything else it claims.

I have other tools showing no issues with end to end connectivity between me and multiple points on the internet, yet it claims packet loss issue on my line.. and where it claims it is a router simply ignores most ping at it, which is not a problem.

Take it out of bridge and get stats and re-bridge it, with knowing the simple stats on the line, there is little else to show where the issue is or isn't.

You completely missed a step in basic trouble shooting. You have to know Layer 1 is good before looking at Layer 3

I'm sick of the support folks telling me that it's my gear that reduces the performance of this connection to 0.3 Mbps
Simply put Windstream has oversubscribed the network out here. There is no competition and we all just have to eat what they give us until someone else comes along with a real network. Then there will be a scramble to save us all from leaving.
I for one am going to be looking around hard for an alternative. Maybe there is enough of us out here we can start a coop and put these guys out.
Really Really pathetic guys....
Takes a look at the packet loss last four days.

Sadly this is EXACTLY what happened here, a week before my current GPON FTTH ISP went live in my area they turned up the fiber to the DSLAM after about 2-3 years of oversubscription issues, but I had promised Windstream long before that if any alternative came I'd leave and at the time I switch from "12/.7mbps" to 30/30mbps for only $3 more..

Speed test after boot
There has to be a way to make Windstream live up to their commitments. I have had to reboot this system four times today. It's pathetic. I'm going to write e state and get a protest going again. Anyone in?

This is e best performance in a week. I'm supposed to get 10 X 1.

Ok so I restarted as above and within minutes it was down again. I am having 100% packet loss and its out again. I'm tethered to my phone to post this.

I'm going to FCC and Georgia Consumer Affairs. This is enough. Anyone else care to join in?
