Colin posted : Xfinity is the brand for Comcast residential service, which includes TV, internet, voice and home security.

X1 is the platform that powers residential TV service. It's the successor to the blue guide that you have probably seen many times over the years. It's an HTML-based platform that also has cloud DVR and online streaming of TV content.

The XG1 is the DVR box on the X1 platform. The XG2 is the non-DVR box. Generally, each home will be given one XG box as part of an X1 install.

Additional boxes are model Xi3 or XiD. These are client boxes which use tuners from the XG1 or XG2. Standard practice is to provide one XG box and up to three Xi boxes before adding a second XG box. Each additional box is $9.95/mo (additional XG1 boxes are $19.95/mo, since they expand your DVR storage).

Some examples:
A home with no DVR and 4 outlets would receive one XG2 and three XiDs.
A home with DVR and 5 outlets would receive one XG1, three XiDs, and one XG2.
A home with DVR and 2 outlets would receive one XG1 and one XiD.

There are multiple models of each XG and Xi box, from manufacturers like Pace and Arris. They all run the same X1 software.

A DTA is a one-way box that will receive digital starter channels and no premium channels. They have a guide but no On Demand functionality.

Hope this clears up all the terminology :)

Ultibeam posted : You're already on Xfinity. It's just a rebrand of Comcast residential service. What you'll gain by switching to a new box is X1. The XG2 is what you'll want as it's a standard HD receiver without DVR, but it does have a little DVR function for pausing shows for up to 30 minutes. Do you have HD service?

Mike Wolf posted : Higher bill perhaps? This is a hard question to answer since we don't know what your service is like with your satellite provider. Could say better picture quality and more channels, but that's assuming you don't get both of those things already with satellite. It'd be like saying you get a free puppy at signup. It's all guesses and assumptions until you try it out yourself and determine if you like it.
--
I'm always up for a good chat and helping with tech problems.

hardware bum posted : I'm a long time Comcast subscriber. No problems here and it's my only choice other than satellite. Every week I get at least 2 mailings persuading me to switch to Xfinity. So, would someone be so kind as to explain what I would gain by switching to Xfinity? Newer equipment for sure, but what else? I'm on a Motorola system and have no need for a DVR or phone or alarm service. We have 2 TVs, own my modem and use the internet extensively.
Thanks.
