Re: [Plan] Side Discussion on DOCSIS 3.1 Gigabit serviceHeads up. Tech is here now and insists that they provide their Technicolor modem for the service. He had to make a call to confirm but was unwilling to allow me to keep the CM1000 in place. Even when I confirmed it was DOCSIS 3.1 and Xfinity approved.
He even insisted that he must install the Nighthawk in place of my RT-AC3200. The claim is because 'these are the devices that Comcast can control and they cannot push firmware to my devices or control them'. It took all I had to not lol. I'll see what I can do with the store and support later.
Maybe they have to install it as part of the 'trial' process. Who knows at this point |

Who knows at this point Yeah, Comcast's D3.1 gigabit service is still in the "advanced customer trial" phase, so that's why the tech's hands are tied: » Re: [Plan] XI Gigabit DOCSIS 3.1 - data cap with 3-year agreement? After the tech leaves, however, other D3.1 service subscribers have substituted their own router without a problem, so you may try connecting up the CM1000 and activating/registering it using the automated process described here: » Re: [DOCSIS] Docsis 3.1 modems? |

That's not going to go over very well. I have a Ubiquiti Security Gateway Pro with 4 WAP's (Ubiquiti UAP-AC Pros), pfSense for an OpenVPN server, etc. It would be a significant downgrade to go to their router, and quite frankly, I don't want the headache of having to redo things.
If he refuses, I'll just politely send him on his way. |

Yea, I may do that. Just a headache to call Comcast to reauthorize my Netgear CM1000 again if they insist on their own router/modem.
My window is 3-5 pm. It's 4:21. I may be getting $20 off (rolleyes). |

An update for you. I substituted my own router and modem after the guy left with no problem. He didn't connect any of my old stuff up anyway and my CM1000 came right back up. I didn't even lose my IP. Just have to deal with billing to remove the Comcast gear.

Technician just left. Arrived at 5:15 (yay, get $20 off).
Told him I already had everything up and running with the Netgear CM1000 and my own router. He said "so you don't need the modem? I'll check your signals and make sure everything is grounded."
He checked the cables, ground, etc. Found that the orange cable (drop from street) didn't have a conduit pipe on it as it entered the box on the side of my house. He put one there.
Told me he was noting the account that I didn't need the modem so I shouldn't be charged for it.
Not getting the best speeds likely due to congestion right now. About 750-900 Mbps. Not sure what on my network might be downloading/etc. and what the neighbors are doing that will hinder this.
Still happy to be getting 700+ consistently down and 40-45 up. |

Glad your experience went well. Wish that was my tech too! Now I have to fix billing. Great. |

Oh I'm sure there will be an issue. Either CableCARD will be messed up or they'll say I received modem when I didn't. |

@tshirt, wasn't complaining dude. Was just stating it. |

I know, but you must admit there is a faction that see any less than perfect advance as a failure rather then a start. ENJOY your availablity |

(world's smallest violin mode OFF) If I purchased Gigabit service and Comcast's own speed tests couldn't show download speeds near that I would be demanding a rebate on each month's bill until they could provide it. When they provide 250 Mbps speeds they certainly provision to exceed it, though with Gigabit service the limiting factor is the 1 Gbps Ethernet port. |

Comcast isn't using a whole 196mhz OFDM block right now (read that somewhere in this sub forum) just half of that; 98mhz wide. That cuts the overall capacity of the D3.1 service in half. 192mhz of 2048QAM at the node would net 1.7Gbps of capacity for all hosts on the node (D3.1 only, not considering the D3.0 channels that can be bonded as well).
Comcast only deploying a 98mhz block nets around 850mbps of D3.1 capacity. They need some D3.0 channels to reach 1gbps. It's a pretty oversubscribed system right now and that won't be fixed without Comcast spending $$$$$ on plant rebuilds, or at least vacating enough frequency to do a whole 196mhz block without having to overlap other channels. D3.1 OFDM can overlap SC-QAM channels, reduces the bandwidth but makes use of the formerly unusable channel spacing of the 6mhz SC-QAM TV and and DOCSIS channels
They are betting on 99% of users being unable to use 100% of the 1gbps provisioned speed all the time. Most users modems sit idle most of the time. If your on a lightly loaded node you may never see the limitation of the early deployment's less than 1 full block |

So, basically you pay for 1Gb service but do not receive it? What about those on the 2Gb service? Do they get "full" speed, if so how? |

2gb service is over Metro Ethernet fiber direct to the home and is not impacted by any limitation of the HFC plant |
