Re: [WiFi] 30Mbps Over Public xfinitywifi!

For what it's worth, and while I think we're getting off topic here, I run an open AP at home (my own, not Comcast's). Yes, I know there are lots and lots of negative implications for this, but I happen to run it on an isolated 2.4GHz SSID, throttle and apply QoS to the connections so that my traffic always takes priority and I've kicked people off when I notice the connection was being overused (and I also happen to limit what ports can be used).

Information should be free and the power/bandwidth being used is often negligible. When my Wi-Fi/Internet goes out temporarily, I'm always appreciative of the neighbor who's doing something similar.

I agree running a hotspot is a neighborly thing to do. I used to live across from Tropicana field and for certain events I used to fire up an old Linksys 54G double NATed behind my primary network with the radio limited to B only. This would provide a link rate of 11 Mbps and a connect rate of approximately half that so the impact of a few people checking their e-mail wasn't going to be noticeable on my network.

I had no idea so many people were doing this...hmmm...

If a company were to supply you with this access point for free to connect to your network to create a free public hotspot limited to b and 1Mbps, would you install it?

I had an idea a long time ago of how to create a free public wifi across whole cities, but I didn't think people would be willing to connect the devices so I didn't give it any more thought after my initial research.
