News anchor sets off Alexa devices around SD ordering unwanted dollhouses

»www.cw6sandiego.com/news ··· lhouses/ from »www.hardocp.com/news/201 ··· ail_day/ ...

"Shh! you may want to turn down your television set because Alexa the internet-connected home assistant device may be listening.

The Amazon Echo system which does everything from getting your weather report to ordering more laundry detergent can also do some things you don’t want it to.

When it comes to answering those tough questions or getting that extra help around the house, Alexa, the voice service that powers Amazon Echo is just a voice-command away..."

Funny and scary.

Alexa - Go eff yourself and turn off. This calls for a battery pull or a power supply disable.

"TV guy invents new distributed resource-theft attack"

It also occurs to me that I have a phone-answering machine where the incoming call is audible (I screen calls). If I had an Echo device, which I don't, that would now be an attack vector.

"...“Down the road the technology will be more sophisticated where it will be able to identify certain individuals and register people can access it,” he said.

Amazon says shopping settings can be managed via its Alexa app, including turning off voice purchasing and creating a confirmation code before any order...."

Looks like a security setup is needed so it can be mitigated (but maybe should be on by default). The confirmation code seems to be the way to allow ease of use and have basic security for purchasing.

Nothing new here... I'm trying a new voice recognition / control software on my phone. One amusing but
annoying habit is for it to think it needs to be active and listening when the phone is speaking an alert to me,
to which the voice recognition software takes that to be the command to be executed.

Now I see why voice commands like "Hey Siri" and "Hey Google," or even Star Trek's "Computer..."
command was required to "activate" their respective responses. Can imagine how embarassing that'd be
how some harmless idle chitchat in Starfleet manages to initiate the shipwide selfdestruct sequence

Star Fleet Red Shirter : blabblahblah self destruct blabblahblah
Computer : Okay, Self Destruct initiated. You have 60seconds to evacuate the ship... 59... 58...
Star Fleet Red Shirter : Insert string of 4letter explitives
Captain : What the **** is going on here?!

"alexa, unlock door"

people are talking about amazon's echo but not iphones and smartphones, and MS's cortana, and the chrome browser, all of which are always listening in on everything that is said..

i don't get why more people are not concerned about it..

as i have said before, for all we know, our TV-set-top boxes are spying on us..

i heard one congressman say, after a closed hearing, that the government is spying on people in ways that they don't know, and that they aren't going to like, once they find out about it..

So i just need to you really loud to get into someones home now? Much easier than a bump key.

Popup audio ads saying, "Alexa. Amazon Order, but 30-cases of KY" might be amusing." Although a cross-site attack will probably work just as well.

I feel sorry for all the girls named Alexa. People will refuse to say their name now.

Did you see the analysis that showed most of the commands given to the echo are stored on the associated phone? Now the cops don't really need to sue Amazon, since there is a forensic tool to extract the commands from the phones.

I was gifted one for Christmas. This is one reason I haven't set up voice ordering (it has to be explicitly set up--it's not on by default). The most it can do is send a link to the app on my tablet.

The Echo Dot also has a button on it to disable the mic. Unfortunately, this function cannot be controlled by voice.

I turned off ok google stuff because of the tv triggering it i never use it so no loss to me. Now i have a little dog training clicker and for fun fulling around ive used voice search then sit there and click the clicker. Some clicks register as words or letters for the voice to test features on phone. Whistles as well. Might be fun to toy around with and learn how to use clicks and whistles to type via voice lol. new for dummies book

Since they are now including it on some Kindles, you had better check. If you give a Kindle to a child, you have to make sure Alexa's off or set child protection.

Disneyland (Anaheim, California) used to have a "Carousel of Progress". One of the scenes was in the future with a voice-activated oven. With something cooking, the family chit-chatted about other things that included numbers, and when each number was mentioned, the oven would change its temperature setting, the last one being several thousand degrees, followed by smoke coming out of the oven.

So, do people's Clappers turn off the lights every time the Clapper commercial plays?

The Clapper, the most advanced technology to ever grace our television screens!

Everyone should run out and purchase a Clapper to plug their Alexa, Echo, Google Now, Siri, etc devices into...

An implementation of technology does not have to be advanced or complex to be useful.

And a little googling, you find "clap on, clap off", and your partner wakes up from the clapping! Also, with modern TVs, when you "clap on", more likely you are powering your TV to "standby mode", which is what we currently call "off".

I'm actually surprised it hasn't happened a lot more often...

My Xbox 360 frequently reacts to stuff we are watching...

Immediately followed by someone loudly saying 'Cancel', sometimes a few times

Might not be a bad idea on the Alexa/Echo. That way you could easily disable it without physically hitting the button.

I have seen the Clapper commercials so often (they are especially frequent on the multicast networks like Get.TV and MeTV), that when I start to get impatient for the signal light to change, I'll clap twice.

This only affected people who didn't think they needed to add a four digit verification code. Whenever voice controlled anything comes up I think of this Dilbert cartoon. I enabled voice purchasing on my Echo, with a four digit verification code, I also use one of the alternative wake up commands.
