deergod1 posted : I just went through this. Tried several of the new, cool routers like the Netgear R7000 and the ASUS RT-AC87U. I am now BACK to the ASUS RT-N66U with Toastman's Tomato. The guy that convinced me to try again has several installed in large commercial and residential installations with as many as 250 users. I had one and bought two more refurbs for $50 each. With QOS, it's the most stable, fastest setup I have ever had.

Straight As on the DSLReports Speedtest/Bufferbloat too!

My network is never swamped and no one ever complains (now). I run a 50/10 and it's supposedly good for whatever your DOCSIS 3.0 modem can support via your ISP. If you need more than 450Mbps INSIDE your home, run ethernet.
switchman posted : So run a cable and install a Ubiquiti Unifi Ap-AC Lite or another router in AP mode. Or get something like this and install the wifi end in your bedroom. Do not install either unit in a power strip. Plug them directly in the wall. If possible do not have anything with a surge suppressor plugged into the same wall socket as the unit. I have not used these, but a quick look at the manual makes them apear as a real dumbed down AP, but they should work and are the easiest to implement.

TP-Link AC1200 Wi-Fi Range Extender, AV1200 Powerline Edition (TL-WPA8630 KIT)
»www.amazon.com/TP-Link-E ··· 0+KIT%29

anon posted : IMO LR models are more important if your network consists of a lot of tablets/smart phones, or other devices that have small internal antennas. This is because higher dB output from the router won't do anything to improve the routers reception of signal or the tablets broadcast of signal. However, that same quality of having generally lower dB makes it less helpful as a mesh AP.

Some folks will tell you that they love the indoor LR and get great performance throughout their 4,000 square foot home. The AC-LR is touted as having symmetric performance so it should win except the part about omnidirectional antennas. Others would say modern clients want 5G and the AC-LR is LR in 2.4G. The high power 5G is the AC-Outdoor which is both pricey and deprecated. However the modern LR units are the 2x2 AC-M and the 3x3 AC-M-Pro. Both are spec'd at 183M just like the AC-LR and AC-Outdoor despite significantly different output power. Personally I'd look at the AC-M which should be an all around good performer particularly if placed so the omni antennas are working for you. Otherwise the AC-Lite except for that voltage converter dongle problem if you're set up for 802.11af/at.
