[Equip] CM1000 vs SB8200

Since AFAIK these are the only 2 commercially available (and I use that term loosely) D3.1 modems I was thinking a comparison might be in order, and to avoid it getting buried in the D3.1 modems thread I figure it should have it's own thread.

So from what I know

SB8200 Pro's
2 Ethernet ports (though without any real defined use.)

CM1000 Pro's
Lower cost

Please add to this.

Also does anyone have the powersupply specs of the SB8200? I know the CM1000's Power supply specs are 12v1a. (which for me that's nice as I have a high quality regulated 12v powersupply that I'd be able to use.)

For what it's worth, label says +12VDC 2A

Well, how about some cons:

CM1000 Con's:

Users have experienced a number of initial problems with the CM1000:

However, it looks like a fix is about to be released for the latest, "need to power cycle often" one now: »Re: [DOCSIS] Docsis 3.1 modems?

Well it looks like the SB8200 is sold-out/pre-order only.

So I guess I'm leaning to the CM1000 atm.

And looks that I can use my 12v powersupply on ether (I like my powersupply because back when I was doing bitcoin I bought 3 of these regulated 12v powersupplies and with the higher amp rating they run very cool, and as they thus run at a lower percent of their capacity they also provide very stable power.)

The SB8200 is still the same status as it's been all month- preorder. However it's been shipping out to customers without issue. There is even a Puma 6 result posted with positive results. »SB8200 32x8 DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem - Feedback and Results thread
So far it's simply a waiting game for Comcast approval, which I hear is any day now.

I went ahead and stopped by BestBuy and bought the CM1000

I figure I can't find a pro for the SB8200 that justifies the added cost, and I want to be able to go ahead and dump this DPC3939B (note the B only have it for statics which I'm going to dump)

FYI - It appears that NETGEAR released the new version 2.01.15 firmware to the MSOs yesterday: »Re: [ALL] Netgear CM1000, Cox certified.

Maybe you can ask netcool to provide it to you right now as a volunteer beta tester.

I've had my CM1000 for almost a month now and it is a huge improvement over the 6190 I had. Hopefully 2.01.15 fixes the t3/t4 issues and uncorrectables.

According to someone on the Netgear forums, Comcast should be pushing out the .15 firmware update "early next week".

Well seems I have to wait for weekdays to get to the right people at BCI to change my plan to drop the statics and change modems (and maybe test the waters of going through retentions to get an overall better rate.)

Hey, got news, apparently the config files for the SB8200 have been uploaded to the config servers, so now it's any day until it shows up on the approved list. »Re: [DOCSIS] Docsis 3.1 modems? Quite exciting.

Yes, just wish they were doing 802.3bz.

Still interested in what options consumers will have for the 2 ports.

Well I have the CM1000 up and running now on BCI.

Though when I go to 192.168.100.1 it asks for a login.

The default is admin/password, just like all other Netgear equipment. You can change the password in the Advanced menu.

And my RF stats, so the DPC3939B bonded 16x4 (the max it can) and this is bonding 24x4 (the max for my area ATM)

I'm not 100% happy seeing those -7's, guess I'll remove the 6db forward path. (correction, take off the 6db and put on the 3db.)

One SB8200 pro (heat dissipation not withstanding) is that it is much smaller (especially in terms of height) and easier to balance than the CM1000. I don't like the CM1000's stand design much.
A CM1000 pro is that it is black which I prefer over white (almost all my devices are black so the white SB8200 stands out).

However, at the end of the day, whichever of the two performs best overrides any other considerations (assuming the performance difference, if any, is significant of course).

Came across this in another thread. »Re: SB8200 32x8 3.1 cable modem - Feedback and Results thread

Anyone been able to try out how the two independent GigE ports work?

I heard from a very well informed birdie that the hardware is capable of Link aggregation but its not available yet as a option. So it might come later as a firmware update.

If the 8200 eventually supports link aggregation to get more than 1 Gbps out of the modem, that's something the CM1000 can't do.

Even if it doesn't, I can see many configurations where being able to use one port for wired Ethernet and one connected to a WiFi router could be rather useful.

Does the CM1000 have to be positioned upright? Or can it lay on it's side?

It's got a stand on it. It's meant to stand up. Don't lay it on the side if you want it to last for an extended period. See here: »[Equip] CM600 Overheat

Darn. I'll have to get the SB8200 then when it gets released on Amazon. My TV stand doesn't meet the height requirement for that bad boy.

Sweet I got word from a tech that my area won't be upgraded till probably third quarter this year so I'm holding off until then but I wanted to go with Arris because I had such a good experience. Even though I really have never noticed the Puma six bug. Even after testing my connection and trying to use it to its fullest extent. Although I recognize that it does exist and I am affected by it course

Re: [Equip] CM1000 vs SB8200

anyone know when Comcast will approve the SB8200?

My experience with netgear products has been on the so-so to not that great side lately.... personally I've never had a problem with straight out arris modems (never bought the puma chipset though so I know that's a one off at least)

When I talked to Arris a week ago when they were shipping my modem out he said they were shooting for the 22nd of this month.
