New install speed questions

I just had ATT fiber installed today. 1000 variety. When running speed tests from here or from speedtest.net, I am only seeing 575 down max. I am seeing 939 up though.
I have the 5268ac.

Is this normal?

Thanks

Typically, you should see a little above 900 as your perfect speed. I often test at 930-940 down and up, so you upload speed is pretty much maxed out to what it should be and is good.... You download speed is indeed a bit too low and needs some attention. Could be a problem upstream, could be local with your ONT as well. What did AT&T say about it?

Haven't talked to them yet. Wasn't sure if it was normal and it would ramp up later.

I had the same thing happen when I installed. At the same time I got a new laptop for work. The old one was only pulling around 680 down, but was pushing a little north of 900 up. The new laptop did a bit better than 900 each way. Turned out it was the laptop.....

Check for an update to your Ethernet card driver. Lots of older drivers exhibit that issue. Also could very well be your machine.

It is an older machine. I'll check for updated drivers. Thx

I had my wife bring home her work laptop. We'll test with that tomorrow.

We've seen similar with older systems, systems that we didn't think should be too old.

Father's Core2 with intel gigabit onboard can't keep up. His first gen i5 520M is hit or miss also.

If you are using the speedtest.net website, that is a java app. Java isn't a native library, it's running in an emulator for cross platform compatibility, and thus is a cpu hog.

There is a native Windows10 store ookla speedtest app, that runs native x86 code. Does much better on older systems and mobility cpu's found in laptops.

Reboot into Safe Mode with Networking, connect directly to the modem/router via the yellow ethernet cord they provide and try again. That should tell you if it is a software problem or if it is a hardware issue. I lost significant speed with Panda internet security installed.

Also, check you cable. I had an older patch cable feeding the wall to the switch downstairs. Turns out the patch cable only allowed 100/100. After replacing it with a new cable, viola.

Tried two different brand new cat 6+ cables. Same results. It does appear to be a pc issue as trying different versions of IE, 32 and 64 bit versions generate different results. 32 bit comes out to about 650 down. Chrome is in the 500's.

Never got a chance today to test with my wife's laptop. Wasn't home much.

I'll try the safe mode option tomorrow as well.

Thanks for all the help everyone.

on the 5268AC gateway,
Access your gateway (192.168.1.254)....

Go to Setting tab and the LAN selection.

The last item on top right should be IPv6,

uncheck Enabled, Select SAVE , should ask for the Device Access Code found on Label of gateway.

See if that helps, AT&T IPv6 has been known to have serious issues in the past.

No increase in speed turning off IPv6.

My wife's laptop didn't see any increase either. It's a couple years old. On the speed test here , she saw the message that the computer is too old to take advantage of a high speed network, or whatever that verbiage is exactly.

I'll contact ATT tomorrow and ask.

I see this issue on a weekly basis and I have to lean towards your computer cant keep up with the speed. I have seen a guy with a new desktop PC AMD 8 core machine but 1.8GHz and it topped out at 550 Mbit on the
speed test up and down. I have seen a Mac Book Pro Core i7 3+ GHz peg the speed test at 940 Mbit and the other 60 meg was network overhead. If you call AT&T and tell them the numbers you are getting they are
probably going to deny a dispatch, AT&T acceptable rates over Ethernet for 1Gbit service is 600 Mbit. I would check with a more powerful computer first because the tech could charge you $100 dispatch on demand fee if he doesn't find anything wrong.
