I don't hate him but he's not the character from the comics, which would have been a better character IMO; From what I recall back in the day he was a rich guy that was intelligent, focused, and slightly zen-like, and didn't seem as much of a softy.

I enjoyed the show though but I feel it could have been much better.

Also, something I didn't know because I've never read these comics: Colleen Wing is a frequent partner of Misty Knight, the policewoman who was shot in the arm in Luke Cage. In the comics Misty gets a cybernetic arm designed by none other than Tony Stark. According to imdb, we will see both Colleen and Misty in The Defenders, so I wonder if we'll see Stark, cybernetic arms, etc.

Nope I liked it a lot. My one complaint (that has been mentioned here) is why Danny left his post so casually after 15 years training to be the Iron Fist, and why he is such a mess emotionally after said training. Some explanation would have gone a long way in that regard.

K'un-Lun doesn't have access to the rest of the known world accept for once ever 15 years. Danny simply didn't have the option of leaving before this excursion. When in Rome do as the Roman's do, when in K'un-Lun train to become the Iron Fist as they clearly have formidable enemies. Danny lead a life interrupted therefore it's not physiologically out of sorts to want to explore what he lost for any number of reasons once the opportunity arose.

Truly abandoning K'un-Lun would have been to leave with no intention of ever going back. Danny did try and go back so while it was dereliction of duty it could have been worse from the perspective of intentions.

Presumably the gate or pathway to K'un-Lun is now closed so while Danny tried he cannot go back for another 15 years. Unless he has some special way of getting there being that he is the Iron Fist.

As for his lack of Zen, I can only theorize that becoming the Iron Fist means a gift must be bestowed on you. That gift is given by the Dragon. Perhaps the will of the Dragon is a powerful force within him and he loses his $#!t when his chi is off.

BTW, am I the only one that found it interesting that the Iron Fist in the found footage had two Iron Fists while Danny only has one? I guess he really needed to complete that training huh.

While I did read some Power-Man and Iron Fist comics as a kid I was never that clear on the Iron Fist origin because it wasn't my favorite series of books.

Visually I was expecting the Kirby crackle but it was fine without it. Generally speaking though it seemed to me that the Iron Fist FX would have benefited from some kind of sound effect.

I'm kind of in the same boat. I thought Daredevil was fantastic, then the rest of the shows got progressively worse.
I think that's because Jessica Jones and Luke Cage aren't trained fighters, they just punch stuff. So the fights weren't as entertaining as they were in Daredevil.
I figured Iron Fist would be better as he's a Kung Fu master, but the writing was bad and the fight scenes were unimaginative (except that one in episode 8). It turns out Finn Jones was learning the fight choreography 15 minutes before he shot the scene.

By the way, when I was looking up Jessica Henwick (Colleen Wing) earlier on imdb, I did notice that she's scheduled to appear in The Defenders in 2017, and that it's status is "filming." So I decided to check on Jon Bernthal and The Punisher, and its status is the same -- filming with release in 2017. I looked elsewhere and I see mid-2017 for The Defenders and just "2017" for The Punisher. I guess that makes sense, as we've now seen all of the Defenders, and The Punisher probably operates on his own schedule anyway. :)

Of course the second link with the obligatory "The lesson here is clear: diversity isn't just important, it can also make for much better television" - I have a feeling the writer wrote that for ideological reasons, without knowing the show may have actually done well.

TBH I don't get it, it's not a slow show, and it's not racist. The only real criticism I have, is that the non-action dialog scenes with Danny are very poor, but they're not slow, just very awkwardly written.

The idea criticism here (despite my disagreeing with it entirely) would have been that Danny's character M.O. has been done before. Even though that is the case it's well done, and Danny is so oblivious to just how much of a jackass he actually is that it makes the character that much more believable. But it's not racist, not by a long shot.

Actually I'm not totally in agreement with the Ghost in the Sell "Major" casting issue because I see her as an anime character that was quasi ambiguously defined, which, is often the case with anime. Look at Naruto and Bleach for example. Give a cartoon character blond hair and blue eyes then expect us to think they weren't supposed to be European because of their name doesn't make a lot of sense IMO. That is self inflicted confusion.

In the case of the "Iron Fist" they are totally way off because the character wasn't altered for the Netflix series.

They are not totally off when it comes to claims of cultural appropriation IMO but as I said before many projects have done this such as "Dances with Wolves", "The Last Samurai", "Marco Polo" and others as well as "Avatar". Project that have won awards and were well received,....

When I said "Avatar" I meant the 2009 James Cameron movie not the 2010 "Last Airbender" M Night Shymalan movie. In Avatar the story was indeed based on an Alien race on an alien planet but the story clearly used Native American Indians as a model / template.

In the end, I don't think any of this should have an impact on the quality of the show overall and should not effect the overall reviews. Apparently many of the reviews are less then favorable and that contradicts my personal view of the series. Overall I'm really pleased with the show because I just find it entertaining.

I don't know if it's really the entertainment industry afraid of Netflix, or if Netflix' scripts don't fit into the same pattern that our beloved connoisseurs of the fine arts are used to and thus unable to create any coherent critique, but Netflix' shows have been getting a pretty low rate approval while the audience had a pretty high rate of approval since the days of House of Cards, and the gap has only been increasing.

I agree but more for the sake of matching the source material more than anything else. ie. Heimdall shouldn't be black, The Gunslinger in my mind is a grizzled black haired Clint Eastwood in his late 40's, etc. (Ironically both examples portrayed by the same actor... )

The Iron Fist, while having obvious cinematic and narrative flaws is pretty dead on as to what Danny Rand is, which has been discussed enough already. :p

Yea, I've seen that ridiculousness on social networking and it's strangely coming more from white women than anyone else. I honestly think it has more to do with them caring little for the subject matter anyhow, and even if it starred an asian they wouldn't like it.

And of course every time someone that's read the comic points out "uhh, that's exactly how it was in the comic book and are you forgetting that he was partnered up with a black guy that had a law degree?" it gets an "I don't care! It's still racism!" kind of response. Insanity.

When I read Luke Cage for the first time in the 70's, I didn't see him as an exploitation character at all. In fact I thought he was one cool cat with awesome powers. If you read Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man in the mid to late 70's you'd all see that everyone had a kind of jive talk to them, even white people.

You don't see anyone saying that Luke Cage was blackwashed...

Those that were familiar with the character Iron Fist AKA Danny Rand from the comics know this. One can only surmise that those asserting this notion had no previous experience with this section of the Marvel universe. That doesn't mean that they aren't picking up on something though.

As I stated before in the "Luke Cage" thread Power Man (AKA Luke Cage) was at his inception an exploitation character. Iron Fist was a character created to capitalize on the popularity of Kun Fu in the US media and culture at the time (circa 1970). There were other marshal arts based characters from Marvel comics at the time too such as "Master of Kun Fu" (Shang-Chi). The difference there though is that Shang-Chi was a Chines character.

So what these critics might be trying to articulate is cultural appropriation or white savior complex. Examples of this in the media would be "Dances with Wolves", "The Last Samurai", "Marco Polo" and others as well as "Avatar".

Whatever the case is the character didn't change much since the character's inception in the mid 70's. On the other hand, some effort was made to update Luke Cage as a character which IMO was a good thing even though the series still seemed as if it was rooted in the 70's.
