trparky posted : A number of years ago Intel was sitting on their asses with the Prescott Pentium 4. You remember that? It was sometimes referred to as the "heat pump on a chip" because it ran that stupidly hot. It also had major performance issues because of its stupidly long 32-stage pipeline which caused it to fail branch predictions more than doing actual work.

Then along came AMD with the Athlon series of CPUs which really kicked Intel's ass and forced them to come up with something new, along came the Core series of chips. For the first time ever we saw Intel make something actually worth buying but that was only because they suddenly had their asses handed to them by AMD.

Fast forward to today and AMD has been less than garbage which has given Intel no reason to really push their R&D teams. Why is that? No competition.

Hell, we had Cyrix back then. Remember them? I do!

me1212 posted : I dunno, 330ish is fair for an i7 and 230 an i5. Plus they've been that price for over half a decade with little increase, thats hardly over charging. And dont expect much more than 5% from amd here on out ether, x86(and all architectures ) can only be made so efficient and so perfect. Even if amd had been competitive all these years we wouldnt be getting 20% year over year. I'd suggest you take a processor/computer design class. I did man it showed me how dumb I used to be. Intel has made strides on power usage and igp these past years though(though I will admit igp is the worst thing to ever happen, fucking could easy fit 8 cores on the die the 7700k uses if not for it)

side note: »www.pcworld.com/article/ ··· cpu.html

trparky posted : Yes that may have been the case five years ago but now we have much more stuff going on inside our PCs. More processes, more threads, etc. I have 156 individual processes running right now with 2,450 threads spread out over four cores. More cores means less context switching since you have more cores to spread the thread workload over.

Not only that but like I said in a previous post, Intel has been sitting idle lately. It's like they're not even trying anymore. It's like they're telling us to be happy with 5 to 10% improvements from year to year and telling us to like it. Well I don't!

I want to go back to the days when processors were improving by leaps and bounds! You remember, right?

me1212 posted : Yes they were a lot larger, but the q6600 and e6600 were the same generation. the q6600 was two e6600 in the same packaage. Before long we'll hit a point where more cores matters since well you are right and ipc gains are less so more cores is all we have left. Personally though I hope we find something to replace silicon that can just clock higher, I think some graphite prototypes hit 100ghz, it'll make my programmer life easier. :D

Guess which one did better for games back then? About 4 years down the line when games started using 4 threads the q6600 was still doable but the e6600 was not so much. But by then the 2500k was out and yeah it was upgrade time. Truth be told I do expect the 5820k/6800k/1700 vs quad core i7 to end similarly but again in 4-5 years from now. By then I'll have done 1 maybe even 2 FULL system rebuilds and since intel and amd are making sockets last a while now(both ~2020 before they replace them they said iirc) so for me I dont care about down the road I care about now. For gaming NOW its 7700k or bust. For productivity/coding/mix of them + gaming its 1700. People need to accept it, especially reddit omfg they are legit mad at amd for not going gaming first over the big money makers and reviewers for being ethical and honest.

As for office pcs I am spoiled. Got an i7 870 and i7 4790 to my left and right respectively in a ^ formation.

You gotta remember too, IPC gains were a lot larger generation over generation back then. Now, we're seeing small IPC gains.

So it's either higher clocks speeds, or more cores for gaming. We all know which one nets the higher frame rates. I'll take the higher clock speeds all day long for the time being.

No two ways about it though, for productivity you can't beat an R7 1700. My point of view is based strictly on gaming (and even people doing light video editing, etc.), since that's all my PC builds are for, the 7700K is a beast CPU.

me1212 posted : Side note: ps4 and xb1 games will never use 8 threads. 1 or 2,depending on the system, cores are unavailable for developer use. Instead devoted to running the os of the system and managing download and internet usage and such. But still games are starring to use 6 to 8 threads. Look at the games where an i7 beats the same generation and clocksd i5

Krisnatharok posted : Except they think they are saving money with thin clients, and don't realize they have to beef up their pipe and network infrastructure to support. Thin clients can quickly choke without enough resources assigned to each VM. Better to use a beefy thick client and do all the processing locally, even if the PC has to be replaced every 3 years. I don't need artifacting and lag when scrolling through an Excel spreadsheet that I would rather work off of locally. It gets even worse when you have multiple excels with tens of thousands of rows and columns open with 15-20 tabs in your browser.

You're going to spend the money one way or another, either upgrading substantial desktops with decent specs or because you are investing more money into your network back-end infrastructure to support VMs being pushed to thin clients.
