Re: SB8200 32x8 3.1 cable modem - Feedback and Results thread

OOoOoOoOOoooo... I have news....

I hooked up both ports to my Mikrotik router and set up link aggragation using both ports at the same time.. It WORKED.. Im playing with different types now. I know Balanced RR works. BUT Balanced RR comes at a price.. »serverfault.com/question ··· -802-3ad

I will try different methods.. Interesting find..

HOWEVER.... This produced bad results. Out of order packets no doubt..

802.3ad did not work. This is what you would want and its obviously not enabled.

Well im ready when that day comes Most likely many moons from now.. BUT MAYBE its a MSO enabled option ? And maybe Cox might turn it on and have the option avaliable from the modem menu ?

I admit it serves ZERO function right now. Until speeds higher then 1Gbps are offered it does not matter. I just like the bad ass look of having the modem connected with 2 cables to the router and having the router bond the ports.

So Balanced RR does work. It runs half the packets thru each interface, I can see it do it. BUT. A speed test shows weird results. Rather then my normal 330/33 I got mostly 200/33.. So dont try this at home.

Hey do you know if any third party firmware that supports any of those?

Router firmware ? I do not know. Maybe OpenWRT but I have not used those in a while.

Its a very good question as 802.3ad is officially upon us. Its time for home routers to support link aggregation. Of course the router would also need to be able to pass those speeds thru NAT and Firewall too and exit thru a dual like as well. Or maybe have a 2.5/5Gbps port for a NIC card on the computer.

Ive been deploying Aruba 335's with 802.11AC wave 2 and getting a device faster then 1.2Gbps you gotta be on top of the access point and not move. So wireless just is not really capable of these high speeds. You gotta have a wire. But then you always need a wire if you care at all about latency and jitter.

You bring up a good point. 2Gbps networking. Its about to be a issue for sure for everybody.

Maybe you could find out for us if Comcast gigabit is overprovisioned to 1200mbit

The real question with link aggregation is what does it do to latency and does the out of order issue preclude link aggregation for use with online gaming and such. If so, then the second port becomes worthless unless you can get a second IP for your gaming rig while your router sits on the first port.

Given that a Gigabit Ethernet port usually pushes 940-960 Mbps after overhead, no one would know what Comcast over-provisions the Gigabit service to until they support link aggregation or devices supporting 802.3bz become available. The SB8200 may support link aggregation, but it's not implemented by the provider.

and if you read his post...

he should have double that capacity
meaning if comcast provisions at 1200mbps he should be able to use it, but his speed test didnt appear to run very quickly with it.
