I bought a galvanized nipple, but it barely goes in half a turn. I didn't try forcing it (yet). I'll try to clean the fitting's threads more with a wire brush.

I've had no luck finding a tap for rent. Even some plumbers don't have this equipment. A tool rental company first told me they had it, but turns out they have only dies for threading the outside, not taps for the inside... Exhausting.

Cleaning the threads with a coarse metal brush or dremel will work well.. Cant hurt to be a bit loose, thats what tape is for.

You can put liquid dope on the galv nipple, and work it in and out to expand the threads, same as a tap.. Looks like you have about 2 solid threads to seal with, should work
