ACC to be rebrandedLooks like Air Canada was either outbid or decided not to renew the naming rights. The ACC will now become the Scotiabank Arena, isn't such a great thing to see your fees spent on this marketing exercise? Toronto's Air Canada Centre, home to hockey's venerable Toronto Maple Leafs and the Toronto Raptors basketball franchise, is getting a new sponsor, and a new name: the Scotiabank Arena.
A spokesman for Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Ltd., which owns the teams and the downtown venue, confirmed a report from the TV sports network TSN on Tuesday that the naming rights to the arena had been sold.
No financial terms were to be disclosed, but David Haggith told The Globe and Mail it was a 20-year deal, and was to be officially announced Tuesday afternoon. More to come. » beta.theglobeandmail.com ··· ail.com& |

Terrible teams, terrible bank, I suppose that is a type of synergy between the two. |

Too bad they can't rename Rogers Centre...if I had the money I'd pay to have it rebranded as "SkyDome"..... |

When the Palladium in Ottawa was named Scotia Bank, all I heard on the radio was "The Bank". I would think if Scotia objected, they could have forced radio stations to use the full name. |

Now ScotiaBank customers know why the monthly service charges went up. |

said by VikingBob:Now ScotiaBank customers know why the monthly service charges went up. To the tune of $800m !!!!! Toronto's Air Canada Centre, home to hockey's Maple Leafs and basketball's Raptors, will be renamed as Scotiabank Arena under the terms of a new 20-year deal described by the bank and Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Ltd. as a "transformative" strategic partnership.
The Globe has confirmed the deal is worth $800-million over 20 years, making it one of the most expensive naming agreements in North America.
The new name is to take effect next July, 19 years after the Air Canada Centre opened and replaced the Leafs' longtime home, Maple Leaf Gardens, in 1999.
In a press release, both sides said the deal goes far beyond the name on the side of the downtown arena. They say it's an "expanded sponsorship and philanthropic partnership" that the banks says will "enrich" and "help expand" the support it already provides for thousands of children's hockey teams in the Toronto area and across Canada. |

That'll be two sports stadiums/arenas with banks holding the naming rights in Toronto next year, seems they're the only ones with money to do so. |

Is BMO Field still the name? |

The city got scammed on that deal . They sold the naming rights to MLSE for so many years at a price ( don't feel like looking it up) MLSE got back their money , by selling the naming rights to BMO for half the period of time .
And they let MLSE build a Raptors practice facility on CITY land , MLSE leases it for 200k/yr and in 30yrs when its all worn out , it reverts back to the city .
Oh and they pay no property taxes on a third of it . |

Scotiabank is been following the Rogers model of getting everything named after them.
Scotiabank Saddledome here in Calgary, Scotiabank Place in Halifax, Scotiabank Field in Vancouver.
Not to mention the Scotiabank Cineplex theatres across the country and the Scotiabank Wednesday Night Hockey broadcasts. |

I have always called it the SkyDome since they changed the name 20 years ago. Then you spent 8 years calling it by its proper name and thinking you were doing something special, since it didn't change until 12 years ago. |

There's a baseball stadium in Grand Rapids Michigan called "thirds fifths ballpark" or something to that effect, named after a local bank, which always has me scratching my head |

LOL, that's terrible.
However if the thrift end arm of Loblaws bought the rights to the ACC it could nave been known as 'No Name Centre'.
King71, I wondered about that too, it seems the 5/3 bank is the end product of a merger between the Fifth national bank and Third national bank in the US. The first time I saw one I immediately though that 1 2/3 would have been a better name (and fraction) but that would have infringed on the names of other banks (first & second banks). |

Yes. » www.straightdope.com/col ··· ird-bankThat merger was over 100 years ago, so who knows WTF they were thinking with that name. Originally it had a hyphen too: "Fifth-Third National Bank of Cincinnati". The story is they did Fifth-Third rather than Third-Fifth so as to avoid offending the anti-booze crowd. |

Sure it is, but if they used that there would be no reason to paint the building yellow. Just imagine the tourist flocking to the core to see what would look like a giant lemon square. New government sponsored research has shown that people like big yellow things. |

This is ridiculous but we need to get used to it, why? because money talks.
Its funny how some venues with corporations in their names are a big problem but others which we have been using for a long time are NOT a problem.
its OKAY to call it the Air Canada Centre but people go haywire when we change the name to Scotia Bank Arena?
Then they claim these companies should not be putting their corporations within the names of our tourist attractions, well hello, what do you think the CN part of the CN Tower stands for? Canadian National as in CN Railway. They could easily rename it to the Scotia Bank Tower if the money is right. |

I'm not sure if you can call the ACC a tourist attraction. |

CN didn't drop of a bag of money to put their name on it -- they built the damn thing. They owned it until the 90s, and it is now owned by a federal crown Corp, so no, I don't think they will be selling naming rights. |
