Re: [CA] San Diego Data Cap has begun

Rentention department stated that "I'm already getting a good deal" (because I'm locked into $85/mon until March 2018) and they can't help me. I explained that that's not the issue - I have a problem with the data caps. That regardless if I was paying $85/mo or $104/mo - a 1TB data cap is insane. She stated there's just nothing she can do about it, and to talk to tech support maybe.

Sigh. I guess I'll have to see if there's any other options in my area, and I filed a complaint with the FCC.

If you have a promo already on your account, loyalty can't do anything. IIRC you need to be 60-90 days at regular rates.

Loyalty can do whatever they want. The question is WILL they? The answer depends on what side of the bed the CSR woke up on this morning.

First one I talked to told me to, "Go to the library with the rest of the poor people if you can't afford our service."

Second one gave me $60/mo for two years for stand alone premier.

Was still under "new customer" pricing for both phone calls. Only difference is the second call I was ready to cancel, the first one I was only exploring my options. Well, that, and the first rep was an asshole, don't think that jerk would've given me anything regardless of my readiness to disconnect.

Yeah, the thing is, I had no idea it was a "promo rate" - when I signed up I was told $84.99/mo was my rate. No mention of it being a promo rate.

Wait until two days before the end of your billing cycle, then call, ask for retention again, and tell them to put in a disconnect order effective for the end of the cycle.

Judge whether or not the CSR is a decent chap or an asshole by the tone in his or her voice. If you suspect the latter, hang up without even giving them your name, call back in, and hope for someone better.....

Bonus points if you actually HAVE a second option. Research it ahead of time, know exactly how much it would cost, and tell them you have an installation scheduled for the same day you want Cox disconnected. They generally know if you have another option at your address and the new customer promo offers made by their competitors in your market.

Unfortunately I have no other option that I know of, other than fake AT&T "fiber", but it also has a 1TB cap and is slower.

ATT gig fiber has no cap, and isn't fake.

Sorry, I should have specified. AT&T offers "fiber" to my house - but what they mean is "fiber to node" somewhere around my house, then non-fiber to my house, at slower than cable speeds with a 1TB cap still.

Slower is relative, I find my 50/10 AT&T connection > my 150/10 Cox one, for both reliability (bulletproof) and cost (less than Cox) but to each their own....

Point is, you have another option. Should be $40/mo + $30 for unlimited. Threaten Cox with that. Be prepared to go through with it if they won't cave and get you "close enough" to AT&T pricing.

Can't muster up a lot of sympathy for folks who have other choices but continue to deal with Cox. They're counting on people like you.....

I think we're in a disconnect here - AT&T has the same 1TB cap like Cox does, at least in my area.

Yes, but they do have options to get unlimited such as bundling video or paying $30 instead of $50. There's always DSLExtreme, their speeds aren't the same but unlimited is built in from the jump.

I don't understand why you folks are arguing with me. I did try and talk to AT&T about this. They have a 1TB data cap. You have to agree to a 12 month commitment. And yes if you bundle they waive the $30 "unlimited data" fee. I don't want TV, at all. I don't need a bundled anything. I don't want to downgrade my speed just to "stick it" to Cox (because I won't be, they won't care, unless the rest of California decides to switch away too)

I just want Cox to realize that in 2017, 1TB is not a "one size fits all" cap for everyone - if people are abusing their connections, sure, make them pay extra. But 1TB a month can easily be accomplished by a family of four with modern devices/streaming/etc.

And there it is, Cox paying you to say that?

Family of 3 streamers here and had to police people like crazy to stay under 1 TB. 4 would be nuts to police everyday combined with other downloads, updates etc.
The old 2 TB tier was fine though.

What? I'm seriously lost now. Aren't you agreeing with me that 1TB cap is crazy? Or are snipping at me because I insinuated I'm fine with caps? To be clear, I don't think there should be caps - but every ISP has an "acceptable use policy" - and there are folks out there who are set to ruin it for everyone. So there has to be some sort of limitation for the extreme cases (who should either pay more or have a business-class option).

I looked at DSLExtreme, but it's the same "fake fiber" (read: fiber to a box somewhere near you, then DSL from there) that AT&T offers (and also slower than Cox Ultimate), and requires new equipment purchase or leasing, and 12 month commitment. Says data is unlimited, but I guess that's not a big deal since you're limited to 75Mbps max - and who knows if they alter their agreement too in the future.

What the hell are you talking about, your reply doesn't even make sense in the context of what you're replaying too.

Cox isn't going to realize anything if you keep paying them.

The bottom line is AT&T is cheaper, period, no matter how you slice it. Bundle, stand alone, unlimited, capped, or DSL Extreme, all are cheaper than the equivalent Cox offerings.

If you have some work related reason why you need uber speed I get staying with Cox, but 50/10 is ample for a family of streamers, never mind 75/20 or 100/20 if you qualify for those tiers. I have cord cutting friends who make a household of five work on the old "Internet 24" tier (24/3), with teenagers in the mix, without complaint. Keep trying to get them upgraded to 50/10, it costs the same, but they see no need....

You want Cox to change but you're apparently not willing to leave, despite having a second choice, something many can only dream of. All you're willing to do is complain online. Well, guess what? The Cox folks read this forum and they don't give a shit. I've engaged them. "Manage your usage" was the flippant response I got.

They're quite literally laughing at you.

I have been debating switching to 25/2 for 3 months now. I can't imagine staying with Cox if I had 50/10+ service available through someone else.

Uh, ultimate is subject to the same 1TB cap and overage penalty system and all of the other tiers. We used to get 2TB, but they cut it in half and now charge $50 to get it back.

Dude I'm saying those of us who use more data already pay more - no need for a cap to make things "fair".

Ah, yes, I agree whole fartedly. Transport is not a cost driver and there is no cost justification for caps. Caps are only a money grab and to aid in MSO defense of its horrid video services against superior competitors like DirecTV Now, Sling, Netflix, etc.

So only other option is downgrade to Cox Internet Preferred 100 and paying the $50.00 service fee for unlimited data

$30 is what I pay for my AT&T Internet, bundle pricing, with unlimited included. 😂

Cox are a$$wipes. You were in the clear until they cut the cap in 1/2. I never went over 2TB I think, but I bounced over 1TB a few times streaming TV from my sling box to my office.

I request the insider information you have about Cox's network and financials to back up your claim.

He may not have it specifically for Cox but you can google and find some studies that outline the average transport costs for isps. I'm too lazy too look for one right now but lets just say their profit margin is probably 90%+ on their internet plans without data caps.
