If I still have speeds of around 200mbps, I'll pick up a flash drive and check the transfer speed.

You're right that 200mbps is pretty fast, but this laptop is old and has that 5400rpm HDD.
anon posted : Connect a USB 3.0 flash drive to the same USB port and test how fast you can transfer. Internet over USB will always be slower than that because there is different packet overhead, but they should be close. If they are way off, maybe something is slowing the adapter down. Try moving it closer to the router and see if that makes a difference. If so, it's wireless settings or interferences. If it doesn't, it's probably driver or driver settings issue.

"Do you think that this would get up to around a 420mbps throughput?"

The adapter doesn't matter so much as the USB 2.0 port you are plugging it into.
lordpuffer posted : I was able to get a Gig down with DOCSIS 3.1 with Cox. Wired on my iMac, my best speed is about 910mbps down on speedtest .net and about 37 mbps up.
