[Electrical] Whoever Wired This Should Be Charged With Attempted Murder...

Anyone else see anything wrong here? At least TWO problems...

Problem 1: REVERSED POLARITY!
Problem 2: NO GROUND CONNECTED!
This is setting up anyone plugging in something with neutral+ground bonded and connected to the chassis to die!!!

what about #3---NO F^$%NG CONNECTOR INTO BOX

i see shit like this all the time, and it still makes me sick how blatantly ignorant/stupid some people are.

I'd imagine that was down over 50 years ago.

Maybe the other end is wired incorrectly, as well.

OT but I frequently do a search on posted pictures to see if there is more info on it. Google thinks this one is a toilet.

Best guess for this image: toilet

How can you tell from the photo that the wires are reversed?

Years ago I installed a modem and the moment I powered it up, it blew the magic smoke.
Had a spare with me and smoked it too.

Used an ordinary circuit tester with the lights indicating errors, and showed all was fine.
Finally found out the ground & neutral were hot & hot was neutral.

I had plugged into their surge protector feeding their printer and router and previous modem - those devices were ok with the reversal.

The small blade (on the right in the pic) is hot, and it's unlikely the wires cross over inside that "box."

It's not, breaker box has the blacks connected to the breakers and the whites on the neutral/ground bar...

breaker box has the blacks connected to the breakers

Withholding information

EDIT: I could have done it, years ago. Grew up (12 yo) with electronics where ground was black. The first time I went to work on 120VAC, it was WTH. This isn't wired right. Then I found out black was hot.

Weren't polarized plugs introduced in the 80's? That circuit looks much older than that, probably before even a ground requirement, in which case the only wrong thing done was not bringing the wires into the box.
Murder attempt? Give me a break...

Please get your eyes checked or break out a magnifying glass or something. There is nothing wrong with the outlet itself. It is a polarized 3 prong outlet and someone hooked it up backwards and did not run a ground line to it.

I have since corrected the polarity and added a ground line and now have a normal outlet.

Also this other outlet near it is newer and was also wired backwards and it's ground wire was not connected to anything in a junction box about 5 feet away.

Had to correct that one too...

The above posts were the garage, now I'm tackling the house. Already found two outlets with reversed polarity with no ground connected in a bedroom.

Is this your house or just working on one?

Up, I don't see a U.L. listing on the string to the right of the outlet.

Corrected the polarity and added a sticker. I'm not fishing ground wire down walls for free...

Are you sure it's not armored cable using the armor as a ground?

With 3 phase, almost any color can be hot, minus those standardized like ground and the like.

i've come across green wires that were hot a few times. i treat them all like they're an angry king cobra now. ALWAYS. even if i trip the breaker and tag it out---asshole customers have taken my tagout off and energized circuits on me before.......

If I couldn't lock the breaker box (actually lock and require cutting/grinding to get in without key, not just tag) I'd ground everything out with jumper wires while working on it like linemen do...

Nice tip, and yeah the RPBG is pretty scary. I like that fluke tester in the video, I'm gonna get me one of those.

Those things are fairly expensive. I can do quite a bit of that with a smartphone connected meter for less than half the price.
