Re: Quicken 2018

I was just about to order a Quicken upgrade (from 2016) but was dumbfounded when I noticed the "/yr" entry after the price. Although I've spent the last 30-min trying to understand the full implications, they are still not completely clear to me. I understand that auto-downloads will now be limited to a year, but as I don't use this capability (I enter everything manually), this doesn't concern me. What does are the suggestions that other aspects of the package will either stop functioning, or will run with limited capability, after the subscription period has ended. Can anyone help clarify the situation?

I refused to upgrade both Photoshop and Lightroom when Adobe adopted a subscription model, and the Microsoft Office 365 subscription model was equally dead on arrival. I hope my concerns about Quicken are misplaced, at least or this year. Help... ?

Just like with MS and others - they want a guaranteed yearly income instead of dealing with people like me who keep a version for a long time and upgraded every now and then. I am still running Quicken 2013. Before that irat it was something likek Quicken 2010 and the one I started with - Quicken '97.

As far as I can tell from what I read, when the 'subscription' expires, it will act like the 3-year limit of the current versions: you lose online access. Also, that subscription probably defaults to auto-renew, too.

Most likely, in a few years, they will do what I believe they are already doing in Canada: When the subscription expires, Quicken goes into read-only mode. You can still access your data, but cannot make any changes.

I'm not sure what your source is for this. A quick review of the FAQ for Quicken Canada says:

You can view, edit, export, and manually enter transactions and accounts, even after your subscription ends.

Access to online services, such as transaction download, quotes, and mobile sync, along with access to Quicken Support, will end if your subscription does. We’ll continue to let you know about product changes and enhancements within the Quicken product.

I'm not sure where you got the idea it would become read-only...

From my understanding it looks like Deluxe and above can still be used manually after the 1 year subscription ends. I guess the basic goes to read only.

What happens to my data if my subscription is cancelled or expires?
The Quicken Data Access Guarantee means that whether you renew your subscription or not, you'll always have full access to and ownership of your data. You can view, edit, export, and manually enter transactions and accounts for Deluxe and higher versions, even after your subscription ends*. Access to online services, such as transaction download, quotes, and mobile sync, along with access to Quicken Support, will end if your subscription does. We’ll continue to let you know about product changes and enhancements within the Quicken product.

It's obvious that Qucken's new owners took a page from Intuit's practices--screw up the software and screw the users.

I'm still using Quicken 4 for Windows--very, very, very old version that I run via XPMode (via Win7/Pro)--and I only use once a month to print my checks for a few recurring bills. When I had my first Win7 system custom built, I browsed around ebay and bought a (slightly) more current version of Quicken (2011 I think) and then discovered that there was no way to move my old Quicken 4 for Windows data to the new version--short of manually--and since I had set up XPMode for a couple of other old applications, the new version of Quicken is basically floorware and I continue to use Quicken 4 for Windows.

Probably too big of a jump - too many integral changes. When I upgraded once it was 3-4 version jump and it was not supposed to work - but it did work fine when done.

The reason you quoted is why so many companies really want to move to SaaS with their business model.

On one level, I actually wasn't all that surprised that I couldn't import the data because I have a small familiarity with QuickBooks Pro (my sister uses it for her clients) and knew that QBP has no backward compatibility so it was unlikely Quicken would--particularly, as you noted, that the version jump was so big.

Indeed...and...may all those companies rot in hell...'-}}

I believe you can update Quicken 4 data files to something newer, but you would need to use Quicken 6, 98 (possibly 99), and 2004 as intermediaries.

From a search, Quicken 6 disk images can be downloaded here:
»archive.org/details/Quic ··· Version6

I've never used .ima image files, but it looks like ImgBurn and WinImage can deal with them. Take note of Q6 registration number, 0025762206, when installing Q6. I don't know if it will work to install Q6.

Quicken 98 (UK version, it seems):
»www.oldversion.com/windo ··· icken-98

Quicken 2004 and 2013 deluxe full versions:
»www.quicken.com/support/ ··· -quicken

Intuit use to have a link to download Q98 or Q99 at the link above, but removed it. You really should move on from Quicken 4, imo. Leave 16-bit behind.

Yes! Thanks for mentioning that as I'd forgotten than detail.

While I recognize that 99% of people using Quicken are using more current versions so this becomes a moot point, it's just like Intuit to block users/make it very inconvenient for users by not writing a simple "convert old to new" utility--as a former computer systems analyst and programmer, the code for this would be pretty straightforward--but Intuit's approach is much like the old Bell system as in "we're THE phone company, we don't have to care"...'-}}

To each their own...

I use it to print a few recurring checks every month and that's its only use--I could just as easily hand write the checks but printing them is nicer--so there is absolutely no incentive for me to install the more current version of Quicken I have particuarly since I use XPMode for a few other things as well.

Besides, I have soft spot for 16 bit software...'-}}
