[Appliances] Any harm in not hooking up icemaker?I'm in the market for a new refrigerator. My preferences are towards french door or bottom freezer models. Unfortunately, I'm having problems finding any of of these types without out ice maker/water dispensers. Is there any harm in operating one of these refrigerators without hooking up the water? Is there a way to turn the ice maker portion off altogether? |

No. And I would pull the unit out for the space.
I personally would never own a refrigerator with an ice maker. |

I personally would never own a refrigerator with an ice maker. I agree with you about ice makers. Almost all of the complaints and repairs that you read about for the various makes are for the ice makers breaking down. |

We have an LG french door with freezer on the bottom with an ice maker. I think the ice maker made it to the 7 yr mark. I just turned it off when it broke, the switch was by the tray. The new ones could be on the front panels now. |

I have never hooked up or used an ice maker. Never a problem.

I just bought this refrigerator no ice or water in the door. It does have ice in the freezer with an off switch » products.geappliances.co ··· E29GMKESWalt |

I agree, and I pulled the ice maker out of the freezer for more room. |

We don't use much ice, mostly just for company, so we use trays when it's needed. I don't hook up ice makers, just pull them out and make a DIY shelf in its place.
We once bought an "all refrigerator" and a small up-right freezer rather than a side by side unit. We don't buy prepared foods, so space for fresh veg and meat was more important than having a fridge with half as much space. At the time, we got both units for less than the cost of a side by side and got more room of each type (freezer & reefer). Our kitchen was large enough that both units fit. |

We do use our ice maker, but to the OP - sure, you can not hook it up / remove it if you want.
We prefer to buy fridge / freezers with the freezer on the bottom (hate side by sides), and we have a 7 cu ft chest freezer and a dorm fridge for drinks. |

I won't own a fridge without an icemaker. Did the tray thing growing up, won't do that again. And the icemaker pays for itself if you compare to buying bags of ice. We go through a ton of ice every year, literally and figuratively. Maybe multiple tons.
But I don't see why you couldn't remove it or disconnect it. If it doesn't call for water and you don't hook up water, it should be fine.

No, it won't. Even if the OP left the maker "on", it will only call for water for the same short interval if it had water. It is a timed fill thing. |

said by garys_2k:It probably will call for water, Ours has a bail that detects when the ice container is full. Raising it shuts off the ice maker. I assume any ice maker has some kind of similar sensor to keep ice storage from overflowing. I though having an ice maker and cold water was a gimmick when we replaced our old refrigerator years ago. Having lived with I've changed my tune. Love the ability to get a glass of cold water, would not buy a refrigerator without this feature. /tom fixed typos |

I only drink spring water. That goes for ice also. No ice maker here used even tho my last 3 refrigerators had ice makers. i just dont hook them up. Mine has food stored in them. I get a kick out of people that wont drink public or private water. Yet they have no problems using ice from the same source. I only trust spring water. |

It's pretty easy to set up a system to connect the ice maker to a water bottle. There are a number of them on the market. |

Most ice makers use the temp of the ice cube tray as a signal to indicate when the water has frozen in the tray. So it will periodically keep cycling and calling for water if the trays aren't getting filled and the lever that detects whether the ice bin is full isn't triggered. Most of the ice makers I've seen in the newer freezers have an on/off switch, btw. Or you can just unplug the electrical connector for them. |

Boil orders aren't that uncommon on municipal systems. Or maybe you're on a well system, etc. But yeah, I agree that most bottled water is sourced from tap water with a little filtering and some salts added for taste. If you truly want clean water, get an RO system. |

Mine wasn't hooked up when I bought the house 4 years ago. Still isn't.
Every 6 months or so the indicator light turns orange, telling me to change the filter. I just do a reset. There isn't even a ice maker in the freezer, just a shelf I made. |

My icemaker actually shoots ice onto the floor when the icemaker bin gets full. I thought icemakers had a sensor that prevented that. |

Where I live the water is quite good, our fridge is from the 90s and doesn't have any filter. Water and ice is crystal clear and tastes great. Last year the fridge sprung a leak, but 15 dollars later it was the diverter solenoid assembly which I easily replaced and was back in business. Could have installed a filter then, but opted not to. |

No ice makers in fridges/freezers for me. Standalone clear ice machines with filtered water is the way to go. Heck, one of the best fridges out there, the True 48", which costs $20,000, doesn't come with an ice maker 😎 |

I can't get my head around you people hating ice makers in refrigerators. I love cold drinks and water from the fridge I would have thought everyone else would too. The only semi-sensible reason to not like them is the need for the space. However all that shows is you either bought too small of a fridge, need a separate freezer, or you're buying too much frozen stuff at the grocery store. |
