Looking at Good Ole Thinkpad

I am currently looking to get a Lenovo Thinkpad, but not sure which one, considering that there are a few variations.

I would be looking for this laptop to be my primary device and would dock with a monitor and keyboard when I am in the office. I would mostly be using this device for productivity, light Adobe illustrator, and general office tasks. I have so far looked at the X1 Carbon 5th Gen and the T470S.

I would like to order one soon since Lenovo is running a sale, and I have a the student discount.

Thanks for your help.

I run the T470S. Moved from my T420S in July. Couldn't bare to give it up, but the battery/power plug were shot. We run the X1's at the office and tried to use one, but I don't like the keyboard/touchpad. Nothing compares to the 420 or before, but I found the 470S to be better of the two.

470S has ethernet built-on, X1 requires a dongle. I don't want to carry another cable on my travels. 470S can dock with a dock (old school/underneath connector) or a USB C dock. I have the USB C dock here at the house and used it maybe twice. Went with the USB C because of desk space. The USB C can be placed somewhere else with all the connections and the cable just dangle on the back of the desk. I do miss the old school dock. Just walk in, push it down and rock and roll. Less wear and tear on the USB C connector too. If you use a mouse on the right side of the laptop, the USB C is in the middle of the right side, were your mouse will be. I don't use a mouse, only the touchpad, so it doesn't bug me.

I'm picky about the keyboard and mouse because I use the heck out of it, so touch and feel of the device was practically make or break it for me.

For ThinkPad specific information and opinions there are two online forums where you will find lots of information, reviews and opinions:
»forum.thinkpads.com/
and
»forums.lenovo.com/t5/Eng ··· unity-EN

I'm using a fully loaded T440p. The touchpad will drive you crazy. No buttons. Bad idea. Good luck.

Your linked forum brings back memories. I haven't been to that forum in years, even though I have it bookmarked at home. Their forum has a treasure trove of information and knowledgeable people.

My company just upgraded us to the X1 Yoga as part of an upgrade to Windows 10. I have been very happy with it so far. It has the touch screen so the screen can be folded back and it can be used as a tablet. A stylus for touch input is also included. We got the i5 version with SSD. Very fast and responsive. Overall, a very cool product.

Just be aware that if you go with Lenovo (as well as HP) that if you choose to upgrade any components, you have to have a whitelisted part for WWAN/WLAN.
