Re: AT&T Smart Wi-Fi Extender (AirTies) finally availablesaid by Bink63:Mmmkay...
You found a branded hotspot that has to be purchased up-front and without a doubt, has to be returned with no compensation when service is discontinued.
PASS Mmmm not quite. it is not leased you buy it and own it. Works with other routers as well. Anyways so far after two days use it works perfectly. Find my devices all connected to 5 Ghz far more frequently and hand off between the 210 and the AirTies is seamless. Tested with several devices while streaming live video. No interruption at all. Consider me quite happy/impressed. Esp for $35! KEEP! |

So you can use it to connect to other wifi devices and your not forced to use it only on the 5268ac or bgw210? |

Called and the tech from India gave me $35 credit that PAID for this device (free!). So I will be getting one next week and will test it! |

First let's clear the confusion. This is only compatible with the 210/5268 due to the firmware allowing a mesh network. ether port 1 on the airties is for the connection to the RG. You can use it as a wifi to wifi mesh but ethernet is highly preferred. Also no tech can replace them if they go out as the system forces a 35 dollar charge to get replenished in stock. |

But what if we don't update the initial firmware? Will it then work with a customer's own router? No it has the basic web gui and it only syncs with the BGW210 or 5268ac. There are no settings to sync on this thing. It just syncs auto when you either use WPS or you plug it into the ethernet port. It sounds like it gets the gateway IP then scans the page for the wifi info since its public on both of those device's homepage. It works pretty good, been using it today so I recommend it. Excellent wifi bridge for ethernet and it does shoot out good wifi. On the modem page, it does show the connection signal as if the wifi extender is part of the modem. PS - I have it about pretty far away and have a switch connected to the port. I have 2 computers and 2 VoIP polycom phones running behind it. Not getting any packet loss and the VoIP calls sound good. It definitely works better than the DDWRT wifi bridge I was running before. |

Thanks for the info. Guess I'll try out a Google Wifi for my parents house then. |

Anybody has been able to extract the AT&T Firmware? Has somebody tried flashing the regular AirTies 4920 firmware? Wonder if it would allow the conversion. |

have three of these units. there is a airties wifi ios app and there was a lot more to configure until the gateway got it's hands on it. you connect to the airties wifi then start the app and configure, but once it connects to the gateway it becomes dumb. Personaly I have found that my devices find it dificult to connect to the units right away. Takes awhile to fully connect. |

It works great and I have ordered two more. Thanks for the tip! |
|

Ordered one myself, just to experiment. Going to try to connect to it via the app and turn off auto-update. Then connect it to my parent's router before it takes a firmware update. (Just using the WPS buttons). I'll report back on if it works. |

Ok, got the AirTies in on Sunday, and took it to my parent's house today.
They have Comcast internet, and are using a D-Link AC-1900 router.
I powered up the AirTies, waited for the 2.4/5Ghz lights to become solid, and hit the WPS button. Hit the WPS button on the D-Link as well. After about 20 seconds, the AirTies synced.
Unplugged the AirTies and took it into their sunroom where their Vizio display is (it's about 20 feet from the D-Link, though two walls in-between them). I checked the signal strength on the Vizio, 2/5 bars on the 5Ghz connection.
Powered up the AirTies (the TV is another 20 feet from the AirTies), used the AirTies app, and it found it. It asked for me to verify the 5Ghz password, which I did. The Vizio then displayed 4/5 bars as the 5Ghz connection, and it connected perfectly. I tested it for about a hour, streaming stuff from Netflix, Youtube, etc.
With that said, the 2.4Ghz light on the AirTies started blinking red, but I think that's due to the D-Link router, it's always had issues with the 2.4Ghz connection.
TL;DR This works with other routers and service providers just fine. |

Did the AirTies take a firmware update on Comcast? Are all the extended functions on the web interface that ATT takes away still there? |

I can't get app to work as it can't find the nodes. Connected correctly but no go. Also, has anyone gotten the mesh network to work? |

After a few minutes, I tried again, and it found it. That's when it asked to verify the 5Ghz password. The app did tell me that my phone was connected to the router, and not the AirTies, so I'm assuming the mesh system is working. May order a couple more for them. |

Has anyone confirmed whether the Ethernet ports can in fact work for mesh backhaul? I realize that the OEM device says this is possible, but I wouldn't put it past at&t to have "engineered" this out of their version. |

Not sure how to tell for sure but on my managed switch when I look at the ethernet port that the AirTies is plugged into, I see the following traffic so I am assuming it is being used for backhaul:
Totals: Receive Bytes : 278219551 Unicast : 14513158 Bcast/Mcast : 2388827
Errors: Receive FCS: 0 Alignment: 0 Runts: 0 Giants: 0 Total Errors: 0 Drops:

Not sure what you mean by mesh backhaul but when I have my equipment plugged up to the ports it shows it as an Ethernet connection on the modem like I am plugged directly to the modem. I also have a switch in the other port that has 5 devices on it that works perfectly. Highly recommend this. |

Going to give this a try as well as a wifi extender, can't seem to get good coverage in our bonus room on the other side of the house from the gateway. Will pair it to a 5268, for $34.99+tax seems like a no-brainer. The OP should get commission on this . |

There's an app "airties" you can pull down for diagnostic and performance metrics. Hooked 2 new ones up last nite, fixed weak spots and now blazing wifi throughout the house. definitely worth $35 IMO |

What problem are you having?
You have to "register" the app to get past the initial setup. I had trouble getting the app to accept some different email domains when attempting to register the app during initial setup.
