[CATV] Anyone have recommendations for streaming TV service?I'm currently on a Spectrum promotion with 100/10 internet and basic/extended cable tv with one receiver. It's set to run out in a couple of months and the price will probably jump about $35 a month from my current $96 to $131.
I'm considering canceling the TV portion and going with just internet and something like Sling TV which is about $20. So I figure $70 for internet then $20 for SlingTv would actually save me a few bucks. I will lose at least some of the major networks but can live without them I guess.
Does anyone else have better suggestions for Streaming services? I'm in the 13073 zip code and none seem to offer all the major networks. |

Have you considered putting up an OTA antenna for your major locals ? With the digital transistion, you either get the stations perfect or not at all. I may have taken Dish since 2000, but I had a working OTA setup well before the stations started doing digital, and it is still functioning today.
If what you're looking for is the network programming - you might check into CBS All Access and Hulu for the others. |

I find that antenna plus streaming is the best substitute for cable. Channel Master Stream+ wich has 2 tuners so you can record/watch the big 4, plus Philo for streaming (cheaper than Sling but more limited lineup and no sports) is worth a look. I personally use a 4 tuner OTA Tivo I got for $199 plus DirecTV NOW ($35/month).
Oddly enough, even after I cancelled my Spectrum TV and went internet only, I can still use my Charter login on many network streaming apps (TBS, FX, etc.). So I don't need a streaming service for those at all.
Our kids get student discounts for Hulu ($5) which is also a good replacement for a lot of networks. |

We have been with Sling+OTA for locals for about a year now and are happy.
Compare the streaming providers with the content you watch.
In our case Sling was well priced within our viewing "wants" that included regional Fox Sports and NBC sports. |

OTA has never been a good option for me. I live in a valley and have never been able to get anything but snowy reception even back with analog and a large TV antenna on top of the house. I was under the impression that with Digital it's even worse now? You either get a real good signal or nothing. |

In that case, you need to look into services that have locals, like YouTube TV, Hulu TV, and in some cases, DirecTV NOW. I'm not sure about Sling TV's locals situation.
My house is in a low spot too, but my attic antenna works pretty well for me. But sounds like you may need a really high mast to get anything where you are. You can always check a site like antennaweb.org to see what you can get and what antenna is required. |

As far as streaming goes, have you checked out PS View? |

antennaweb.org tells me "Up to 0 channels from 0 over-the-air stations may be received at this location." So I guess it's about what I thought SlingTV seems to be the best option as far as price. I have looked at PS View and youtube and hulu but they all lack major networks in my area. I was hoping there was something I was missing. |

I know 30-60 days after you cancel your Charter TV they will offer you access to Charter's streaming service, it's around the same price as sling but the taxes/fee's are not included in the advertised price and vary by location. I'm not sure if it gives you access to locals or not. |

I'm not sure if it gives you access to locals or not. Good call. It does include locals. Problem is it only works in your home. If you don't need access when you travel, that would be a great option. Do they charge the BS local broadcast fee on the streaming service ($7) like they do on basic cable? That puts it up in PS Vue territory, which is a far better service. I almost forgot to mention the unadvertised Spectrum Choice package which runs about $35 after taxes and fees. It includes all locals plus 10 a la carte channels of your choice plus one premium (HBO, SHO, etc.). I had that deal for a while and it worked great. |

Thanks. The spectrum streaming is an excellent option if they do offer it. I have a cable box but don't often use it as my two TV's are Roku so I'm basically using the charter streaming service most of the time anyway.
I actually asked Spectrum at the local office if I could just use the roku streaming and not pay for the box rental and they told me no. Of course they also told me they don't offer a "basic" cable package of about 20 channels either. Time Warner did before the swtich and I believe federal law requires them to do that.
Directvnow is kind of odd. My "locals" would all be in Syracuse, NY and they have local affiliates for ABC, NBC, FOX, CBS and TheCW but directv says no locals at all are available. |

They actually do have a 20 channel basic package, but you have to really dig for it. See my edited post above about Spectrum Choice. I found some more details about this package: » www.satelliteguys.us/xen ··· 4124566/ |

Thanks for all the help and suggestions. When my promotion runs out I'll look in to the retention package or streaming package if Spectrum offers them. If not, I'll likely just keep internet only and check around for the best streaming package that suits me. I watch a lot of Yankee baseball in the summer and SlingTV offers the YES network. |

There is also FTA (free to air) satellite... just would need to buy the box and a lnb (if you do have a spare dish around) |

You can get a free Apple TV 4k if you prepay for 4 months of DirectvNow. If you do the $35/month plan, that's $140 with the free Apple TV that retails for a little more than that. If you don't have a need for the Apple TV, you can sell it and likely recoup a good junk of your money and be able to test out DirectvNow for 4 months for very little out of pocket. » www.directvnow.com/appletv |

I have been a big advocate for Playstation Vue. Have had it for quite a while now. BUT, I am now moving to Sling. Sony took away channels last year and raised the price $10 more with adding nothing new. Just because they can. I have service until the 17th and already cancelled. I have a 30 day trial for Sling with the same amount of money Vue was asking. Sling is the much better value with more channels. DirectvNow is still going through a bunch of growing pains and the service is not up to snuff yet. |
|

I looked at directvnow.com and they didn't offer any of my local networks in my area. That surprised me.
Also looked at playstation Vue and they were also missing at least a few of the local networks. I consider locals to be ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC and The CW.
That seems to be common with all the streaming services unless you live in or around major cities. Syracuse isn't a tiny city but I guess these streaming services have to contract with all the locals individually. |

Never understand why people pay for TV services like Netflix or Hulu or Amazon, etc. I have Terrarium TV and Showbox loaded on my Android phone and watch anything I want cast to my TV through Chromecast. » rawapk.com/terrarium-tv- ··· download |

I would guess because many don't want to play around with the gray legal issues surrounding streaming copyrighted material. |

We had Signature home and dropped TV back in November. We tried YoutubeTV & then and continue to use Hulu Live.
Far better PQ than spectrum on our 4k TV's and with our 300/20 HSI package, we don't have anything for praise. Saved us $160 a month. |

Because some people would rather pay for a consistent, legal service and not get a backdoor installed to China from some cracked APK |

Does Sling still limit streaming to one TV at a time or pay extra? That's a game killer for me. |

Depends on which channels you watch. For our family sling has been great at a reasonable price.
Other services we use are Vudu and Hulu. |

said by dean corso:Does Sling still limit streaming to one TV at a time or pay extra? That's a game killer for me. It's package dependent see below from Sling's FAQ: If you subscribe to our Sling Orange service you can enjoy one stream at a time. Any extras you add to your Sling Orange service will be included in your single stream. If you subscribe to our Sling Blue service you can enjoy up to three streams of these channels at one time! This means you can enjoy FOX on your big screen, while your computer streams AMC, and catch up on the news with CNN on your mobile device. Any extras you add to your Sling Blue service will be included in your three streams. If you subscribe to both services in Sling Orange + Sling Blue, you can enjoy up to four streams at one time! Because you are purchasing two separate services in Sling Orange + Sling Blue, you can get the total number of streams included on each separate service—one stream for any channel on the single-stream Sling Orange service and three streams for channels on the multi-stream Sling Blue service. To get up to four streams, go to the My Account page and make sure that the “show me only Sling Blue versions of channels in both services” box is not checked. |
