Almighty1 posted : Yes, bad capacitors as in inferior grade have put many companies in the 1990s and 2000s out of business as companies will cut in costs and use cheap parts and not things like Chemi-con, Nichicon, Rubycon, Panasonic/Matsushita which are the quality caps. But it is only cost effective fixing something that has a higher value as the capacitors and shipping will cost you quite an amount.

tgp1994 posted : Thank you for all of the amazing replies, everyone.

Ugh, bad capacitors? If this problem keeps up, I guess I might as well take out my soldering kit and practice up. Worse comes to worse, I can always buy a newer one likes you guys are suggesting. The modem is plugged in to a(n also fairly old) surge protector. I also have my router plugged in to it, so I'm not sure if maybe the problem is further down the line as suggested here (power supply, modem components) or somehow the Netgear router is just more hardy? :D I also cannot find a reset pinhole for the life of me. Which is kind of concerning, because settings don't clear if you unplug it. Or perhaps I didn't wait long enough...

At any rate, thanks again for all of the great input. I'd be curious to know if there's any sort of "back-door" that can give me shell access to look for any more detailed logs if the system might have caught something that isn't being shown in the web UI.

jbob posted : Op one more thing for you to try. Is your modem plugged in to some type of multi-plug device either with or without circuit protection? If so either try a new one or simply plug your modem directly to a wall outlet and see if that corrects the issue. There have been cases where the surge protector type(and perhaps the ones without surge protection) multi-plugs have caused issues.

I assume the 6120 does not have a hardware reset button on the back?

Almighty1 posted : Could be bad capacitors or it could just be your specific unit is more sensitive as a few months ago, I had 2 SB8200's for example, the 2nd was a advanced warranty replacement from Arris to see if it fixes the issues with the first one. Ended up keeping the first as that one actually didn't have issues while the 2nd one was as sensitive as the one you have which basically locked up a once a day while the first one never locked up until this day. When it comes to electronics, they just have to meet the specs as some will always exceed the specs similar to why no two mobile phones will be exactly the same for RF performance even though they are the same make and model.

tgp1994 posted : My location is Northern Washington state, subscribed to Comcast internet only for about a year and a half. I've been seeing an issue on and off for the last half-year or so, where my Motorolla SB 6120 modem will become "softlocked". The indicator lights appear normal (even blinking to indicate activity), but internet access will become completely disabled. I can't access the modem's GUI (192.168.100.1), can't get a DHCP response for my router, and I can't even ping the modem. The only way to work around it is by unplugging it and plugging it back in, after which point it will boot up like normal and things will begin working again. The log remains, but it doesn't seem to indicate anything useful. Note that the most recent event occurred around Jan 12 2018 at about 1100-ish.

If anyone knows of how I can get Comcast to double-check the software/firmware, that would be great! I know my modem is EOL, but for the speeds we're getting I really don't see a need to buy a new one. Hopefully this isn't some planned obsolescence a la Comcast.

Recent log entries

Jan 12 2018 11:10:56 	5-Warning 	Z00.0 	MIMO Event MIMO: Stored MIMO=-1 post cfg file MIMO=-1;CM-MAC=[];CMTS-MAC=[];CM-QOS=1.1;CM-VER=3.0;Jan 01 1970 00:00:20 	3-Critical 	R02.0 	No Ranging Response received - T3 time-out;CM-MAC=[];CMTS-MAC=[];CM-QOS=1.1;CM-VER=3.0;Jan 01 1970 00:00:13 	6-Notice 	N/A 	Cable Modem Reboot due to power reset ;CM-MAC=[];CMTS-MAC=00:00:00:00:00:00;CM-QOS=1.1;CM-VER=3.0;Dec 29 2017 20:34:05 	3-Critical 	R02.0 	No Ranging Response received - T3 time-out;CM-MAC=[];CMTS-MAC=[];CM-QOS=1.1;CM-VER=3.0;

Signal information:

Downstream 	Bonding Channel ValueChannel ID 	13  	14  	15  	16 Frequency          615000000 Hz 	621000000 Hz 	627000000 Hz 	633000000 Hz SNR          	36 dB 	36 dB 	36 dB 	37 dB D/S Modulation 	QAM256 	QAM256 	QAM256 	QAM256 Power Level        2 dBmV  	3 dBmV  	4 dBmV  	5 dBmV

Upstream Bonding Channel ValueChannel ID 2 1 3 4 Frequency 36500000 Hz 30100000 Hz 17300000 Hz 23700000 Hz Ranging Svc.
