Subsven posted : I just got CL fiber back in November. Originally 100/50 but they just rolled out the 1 Gbps symmetrical and I jumped on it the day it went live. I used to have FiOS in PA and the two are very similar. Biggest difference is that CenturyLink uses VLAN tagging and PPPoE authentication, and FiOS is just DHCP at the ONT, but both ran the fiber line to a small ONT that connects to Ethernet and then into your router.

The CenturyLink modem/routers that support GPON (fiber) are usually DSL modems that just turn off the DSL modem function and then work as generic OTS routers.

I will say hands down no matter the type, Fiber is hands down the best internet you can get regardless of provisioned speeds or provider. In the last 5 years I’ve had CenturyLink DSL (only option at that address, 1.5 Mbps, absolutely terrible), Verizon FiOS, Comcast Cable (DOCSIS 3.1 service) and now CenturyLink fiber, and fiber offers the lowest latency, no slowdowns and I’ve never once had an outage. Verizon even provides batteries in their ONTs, and you can buy one for CenturyLink ONT’s (the transformer has an empty battery bay) so you if have a UPS in your network the internet will stay up even during power outages if that’s your thing.
