Re: [Install] Need education on whats involved inside a house on a PON instal

Are you getting the 2Gbps Fiber install aka Gigabit Pro? If so, then they install an ONT that has a 1 Gbps Ethernet port and a 10 Gbps SFP port. Then TV would still be delivered via coax.

I have heard that in some areas Comcast has done fiber to the house and installed a tinny looking Node, which converts it back to coax. To my understanding they are doing this in very select area's. But essentially the node would be in your house, but all the current wiring would be used. Thats basically if they are not doing a 2 Gbps install.

Our package with Comcast will stay the same after the rebuild, X1 with Blast internet which is part of HOA dues. Doubt very much that anyone here will order anything near 1GB. Just trying to figure out how much equipment will be installed in the house compared to the current HFC setup. Also how much more fishing in the walls for the new equipment. I have been trying to find a basic house diagram for a typical fiber in the house install, haven't had much luck. So with coax still feeding the cable boxes, would it be the same as having the ONU outside feeding coax to the cable boxes, or even HFC with Docsis3.1 ?

Hard to say. Im guessing that they are running those small Nodes in your house then. They were not very big, just looked like a small circuit board with Fiber ports and coax. Though they will need a power outlet for it.

If your not doing 2 Gbps then they will not install an ONT most likely. As 2 Gbps fiber is acutely not even supported by the residential part of the company. Its supported by the metro Ethernet guys. So I would venture a guess, they will do fiber to the house, convert to coax. They would only need to feed fiber in to your house, and need power for any equipment they need to convert. After that, I would suspect they would just use the coax inside the house currently. There is a chance you will have Docsis 3.1. Basically if you can get Gigabit then your Docsis 3.1.

The customer equipment stays the same.

A fiber line will be run to your demarc to an ONU or mini-node of sorts. From there, everything else is coax.

The ONU requires power. The technician will backfeed it over existing coax from wherever your runs terminate.

The upgrade is not to an ONU at the demarc outside.I wish they were doing it that way, far easier. They are bringing the fiber inside the house. Thats why i'm trying to find out about the the inside and whats involved..
