[WIN10] Memory usage issues recentlyWithin about the last month I am having issues with excessive memory usage. I used to run at about 45% usage when idle. Now I am running at 90% plus usage all the time. I have a Dell with quad core processor and 8GB of RAM. When I reboot, the usage is about right. However, within a few minutes it's back to 90% plus. I am also having an issue with csrss.exe using over 10% of CPU cycles constantly. Any ideas? TIA, Old |

Well, for one thing, that "Antimalware Service Executable" should not be using nearly half a gig of memory. |

Agree. That's Windows Defender Antivirus. |

Click the top of the "memory" column to get the data sorted by memory usage. The main offender will then be first on the list. |

I found this on the web. It seems to have solved the problem.
Thanks.
Luckily this Windows 8/8.1 registry hack still seems to fix the issue in windows 10. Hit Windows Key+R Type in Regedit and then hit enter Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management in the editor Change the value of ClearPageFileAtShutDown to 1 Restart your computer |

That shouldn't have any effect on memory usage. That registry key just tells windows to wipe the pagefile when you shutdown the computer. If you have a big pagefile or slow harddrive, that will also make it slower to shutdown. |

That's just a security feature. If you're worried that the pagefile may have held pages with confidential data, then you can have it overwritten at shutdown.
This parameter does nothing until shutdown, and then it extends the time taken for shutdown to complete, by virtue of it doing extra I/O.
I don't see any way it can affect memory usage in Windows Defender unless there's something in Defender that scans the unallocated pages in the file for malware. Which seems like a very odd thing to do. |

Well, as you all stated, that did not fix the problem. I ran a quick Memtest which did not show any errors.
Any other ideas?

I'd try for a repair install. It is becoming more and more common for my Win 10 jobs.
See if it occurs with the repaired O/S.

I'd try poking around with Resource Monitor, maybe looking at the disk tab to see if I can figure out WTF it's doing. But that's not a crisp diagnosis method, more a matter of grasping at straws. |

1. See if there are too many items in quarantine -- delete them (my Norton goes berserk on that) 2. Add more memory 3. Use a different anti-virus program (you can get pretty good deals on Kaspersky ) 4. Delete all temp and un-needed files (Win 10 has a tool to do that) 5. Do a clean re-install of Windows |
