DSL disconnects when Phone Rings???

I have had earthlink dsl now for a year. I have never had problems with dropping the connection when the phone is in use or the phone rings. I recently installed windows 2000 on my computer and am now using raspppoe instead of winpoet. When the phone rings, the internet disconnects now. Any ideas?

Are you in line sharing or dedicated DSL line? If line sharing, make sure there is no filters on your DSL phone (from the wall jack to your DSL modem), and there ARE filters on your analog devices (56K modem, phone, fax etc.). Are there any cordless phone (900 MHz, 2.4GHz and others) used near your DSL modem?

Just a check list. I had the same problem in my partent's apt., get fixed after replace the filter on the phone line (from the wall jack to the phone).

It is also a good idea to seperate your DSL and your phone line (e.g., instead of pluging a one-to-two spliter into the wall jack, install a second wall jack only for the DSL line, use the orginal one for the analog devices with a filter).

Hope this help...

Also, if your filters are "one-way" (the direction in which they are installed matters) you might try installing a 2nd filter in the "wrong direction" to help eliminate any interference that might be generated on the line by the phone itself.

Everytime the phone has a signal come down the line other than DSL, the DSL signal will drop, however the modem is generally pretty good about picking the signal right back up again, and continuing on. This is a little known fact.
It generates what we like to reffer to as training starts.
Now if a change in software is what brought on this occurance, I would have to heavily lean on the suspicion that perhaps the software is a bit more sensitve to your connection, than the previous one you were using.
Now that is pretty far fetched, but unless you had an ILEC technician out in about the same time you installed Ras, and the ILEC tech did something to your line. Then I would have to re-evaluate the software you are using. Try putting Winpoet back on the box and see if it still gives you the same problems.

you need to call in and have them fill out a Trouble Ticket on that. It is an Issue we deal with often.

You might want to replace any filters you thing are bad. To find this out disconnect everything in your house except the DSL line and 1 telephone line. Keep using filters and see if one of them lets the DSL drop its signal when your phone rings.

Earthlink Electronic Support Response

This is a support response from Earthlink

Unplug all of your existing phones, caller ID boxes, fax machines, etc. that are on the same physical line, then have a buddy call. If the connection does not drop then keep swapping phones and filters until you isolate what the problem device is.
If your connection does drop, then replace the phone and the filter with another phone and filter and have your buddy call again. If the connection drops again then it's most likely not an issue with a phone or filter, but a problem with the software or wiring.

Please respond to this post to let us know if your issue is resolved. If you have any further problems, questions or concerns please feel free to contact us via the live chat link below.
