[HSI] Charter RAC2V1S Router - How to use expert mode?

Click for full size
I was just issued a RAC2V1S router made by Sagemcom, The GUI available by default is very simplistic. So is the user guide. When logging on I see momentarily a reference to an expert mode. Does anyone know how to access expert mode? With the basic GUI I cannot even create a guest network or set alternate DNS.

The manual, such as it is, is here:
»www.timewarnercable.com/ ··· 2017.pdf

Thanks.

Try this:

»192.168.1.254/expert_user.html (assuming your router still has its default address, if not replace with the IP address of your router)

Sagecomms are soon to be discontinued. Once the company runs out we're moving to this new router I just got on my truck today.

I'll post gui pics when I get home and can play with it.

That's the same thing as the sagemcom op mentioned bud, it's just made by a different oem. There are 3 oems available essentially making the same device: sagemcom, arris, and askey. The one you posted pictures of is made by askey.

Great, thanks. That is the Askey variant, Charter RAC2V1K. Looks just like the one I was just issued, made by Sagemcom, Charter RAC2V1S. I will be very interested to see if your gui matches the manual for the Askey which I have attached.

According to this manual, the Askey gui is more comprehensive and you can do exotic stuff like creating a guest network.

So please let me know the Askey you have has the capability of setting up a guest network and specifying alternate DNS.

Thanks for reply. This link works but unfortunately reaches the same simplistic gui after login. I wonder if a different user name is needed? The "admin" U/N cannot be changed although the password can.

The hardware appears identical. Do you know if the gui is identical between these variants?

Yeah, personally, I have my own router now (thank God) connected to a modem/emta. But I researched it for you and came across the directions from a similar gateway but was being used on ADSL.

Thanks for doing that. I am hoping the Askey variant will do what I need. Assuming I can get one. If not, it's off to SNB to research new router. My AC66 will not make 940Mbit.

I went back to using my own router again lately. Had a few issues with the gateways and a later issue that Spectrum could not figure out (and was on their end) I resolved it on my own using my own router. I was using gateways in the past cause TWC used to charge for modem/gateway rental and if I wanted my own router and own cable modem, I would have been stuck with 3 freaking devices because of the phone service. Now that they're not charging modem rental (the cost is still probably buried into their bullshit high rates) I was able to get my own router again. And now I can finally have control over my own network, once again.

You want to see a "bullshit high rate" let's look at my Comcast:

Gig is actually $140, and unlimited data add on is $50 - had to call and do 2yr contract to get this "great" price

I got this ASkey Router, actually I have a Asus RT-3200, and I was wondering:

What is the speed of this router in Wifi?

This is better than ASUS RT-3200?

This router can be put on bridge or access point mode?

Thanks

To follow up, I have not been able to get into an expert mode with the Sagemcom variant. Gave up and got an Untangle appliance. The original Sagemcom router I was provided failed after three weeks and was replaced today with another new one. I set up as AP because the WiFi is much better than my old Asus.

Did note in passing that the default firewall setting as received and installed by Spectrum is pass everything. See graphic. Is this a security issue or in NAT sufficient?

What is the speed of this router in Wifi?

it says (page 13) 2.4Ghz 450Mbit/s, 5.0GHz 2200Mbit/s

»d15yx0mnc9teae.cloudfron ··· %202.pdf

so it should be at least as good as most 2350 and higher ac wifi,
which typically have 3 radios and can do some form of mu-mimo.

since this is not a modem:router:phone:wifi
it would be pointless to get into bridge mode,
and why pay charter $5 extra each month to
waste this as an AP.

bottom line is if you already have an RT-3200, just keep it.
the only thing from charter worth considering that's better
is if the 802.11aX router they offer soon - if done properly

UPDATE: I'm really impressed with Charter's new 2650ac wifi router.
the 5ghz does an especially good job penetrating walls and surviving
high wifi congested apartment buildings which is needed here in NYC.
I'm getting 35mbps in a guest bedroom of a railroad flat that's got a
2nd bedroom, kitchen, bathroom - between it and the router 50' away.

I had a pretty disappointing experience with mine... The 5GHz is fast, but did not reach my phone in the next room over (other routers do). also the wifi is faster than Ethernet??? on ethernet i got ~40 Mbs and wifi got 118Mbs. weird.

Is this new router only being handed out to Gig customers or to all internet customers?

That's the same exact speeds that I'm he%ing with the same exact router. I had to unplug my Ethernet cable from my Fire tv box to get good speeds. Same exact speeds tho now that's weird. Lol
